About this deal

That said, if you have intricately shaped lawns, it’s just too big. No matter how well the self-drive works. Also, the wheels are set wider than the cutting width. This means the mower won’t cut right up to the edges. As a result, you’ll need to finish the edges with a grass strimmer or some other edging tool. The Mountfield SP53 petrol lawn mower is powered by a Mountfield 166cc 4-stroke engine – ST170 Autochoke OHV. This single speed self-propelled petrol mower has a large 51cm cutting width, 60 L grass collection bag and will cut grass of a large-sized lawn up to 2,500m 2. The 34 kg mower offers 5 cutting heights from 27mm to 90mm and is operated by a single lever. Once I had built the mower and filled the engine with oil and fuel, it was time to start the engine. It was long overdue for me to carry out a review of the Mountfield SP53 self-propelled petrol lawn mower. After testing the smaller brother of this mower ( Mountfield SP41) about a month ago, I wanted to experience and clearly see the difference in power, size and compare the performance and features of both, so you know what mower is the best option for you and your garden.

The HP41 is a lightweight hand propelled petrol lawnmower, with a 39cm cutting width powered by a Mountfield 100cc engine. A 40 litre grass collector and 5 heights of cut from 25 to 70mm make this mower ideal for longer grass, on small to medium sized lawns of 20m x 20m.

As you can see from my video below, the power of this engine was more than enough to deal with the most demanding conditions and to propel the mower up steep inclines. Torque - Torque is a force, the power generated by the engine that gives a machine its ‘grunt’ to turn the blades, and to keep turning them under stresses like long, wet grass. The higher the torque, the better the performance under stress. Powered by the Honda GCV170 Autochoke 167cc engine. Designed to provide an excellent finish on all types of lawn. The Autochoke system on the engine automatically sets the choke to give optimum starting and running in all cutting conditions. Steel chassis with skid plate reduces scalping of the lawn. Features a Dynamic Speed Control (DSC) transmission, a conical clutch that allows for smoother gradual traction. Self-propelled, no need to push, ideal for maintaining lawns with minimum effort. Mulching plug means no need to collect grass as it recycles the clippings into the lawn. Suitable for lawns up to 2500m². Mountfield began manufacturing rotary lawnmowers at premises in Maidenhead in 1962; the modern, high specification machines of today bear little resemblance to their ancestors, but all share a common ethos of quality and value for money - which has helped to make Mountfield the UK’s No.1 for over 50 years.

The Mountfield SP51H Petrol Lawnmower has been equipped with self-propulsion, so will prove a real boon if your lawn’s on a slope, or has sections of rough, bumpy grass. Firstly, if you like a striped finish to your lawn when you have cut the grass, this won’t do it because it doesn’t have a rear roller, just wheels. The fact that this mower has 3 in 1 options is a real benefit in terms of practicalities. (mulch, collect and rear discharge)

This mower has a 39cm cutting width and a 40-litre grass collection bag which makes it a good option for small to medium sized lawns up to 400sq meters. Not only having a part cloth collection bag reduces the weight, it also assists with the air circulation resulting in a more efficient collection of your grass clippings. The disadvantage of a cloth collection bag is that they are more prone to damage – this is particularly so if you are having to mow close to sharp bushes / shrubs. Having said that, replacement collection bags are readily available here in the UK as are all Mountfield parts. An advantage of the hard top on the grass collection box means less dust and debris being projected into the operators face.

A larger blade will draw more energy from the engine as it needs to cover a larger area on each rotation, completing the job at hand faster. The steel desk is of a high quality, built to last but there is no hose attachment for cleaning. OK, it doesn’t create that striped finish that many lawnsmiths strive for. That said, a lawn doesn’t need stripes to look beautifully manicured. If you feel you can handle the 20kg weight and you’d prefer to save yourself some money, Mountfield make the same mower without the self-propelling feature. As an example, my own rear garden is about 15 metres long and 7 metres in width. Multiply those 2 numbers together and you get 105 square metres. Then repeat that process for all your gardens and you will get an approximate square metre size. The best part about it is that the clippings are blown into the turf and not left on the surface. As such you can’t see them and the finish is excellent. Maintenance

Pros

This made pushing it up and down the lawn a breeze, even on inclines. It’s not the easiest to manoeuvre around tight curves but then, no lawn mower is. If you have a large lawn up to 2,500 metres squared I could find no valid reason, not to highly recommend this petrol mower. Please note that there is an Elite version of the Mountfield SP53 that comes fitted with a Honda GCVx170 167cc engine. There is no difference to the specification apart from the engine and that the grass collection box comes with a “Fill Indicator Flap”. That power is supplied by a Honda GCVx145 engine; a pro-grade air-cooled four-stroke unit with an OHV formation for emission compliance, vibration- and noise-reduction, and improved fuel-economy.
