About this deal

Simon worked as a consultant for Johnnie Walker and always knew he wanted to run his own distillery,” explains Chrissie. After distillation, each gin rests in steel tanks for a minimum of a week, before being reduced to bottling strength. Persie Herbal & Aromatic and Nutty Old Tom are ready to bottle within days, but Zesty Citrus is left to lie for another three weeks to keep louching to a minimum. Persie Zesty Citrus Gin to taste… Pour over ice or top with Prosecco, or even in a long drink with soda. Garnish with fresh mint or a strawberry. Or greedy people have been known to pour it over pancakes!

Located at the foot of Glenshee in Perthshire, the Persie Distillery employs a distinctive approach to its gin-making, particularly advocating for the power of aroma to shape the overall drinking experience. Their creations are crafted with a variety of botanicals meticulously chosen not just for their taste but also for their aromatic qualities. The overarching objective is to encapsulate specific, evocative scent profiles that subsequently translate into vivid, delightful flavours on the palate. Consistently voted one of Scotland's most popular gins, this island spirit has been making waves since it launched in 2015 thanks to its unique taste and eye-catching bottle, which has also won awards. Nestled at the foot of the Pentland Hills on the edge of the capital, The Old Curiosity distillery is probably the most magical setting in which to learn more about gin. Visitors can see the gin still, Big Don, and try some of the products available before ending with a gin and tonic in the tasting room. Drivers will be given a 5cl miniature to take away and enjoy later. Caorunn gin, created at Balmenach distillery in Speyside, is another of the big whisky distillery gins.Almost 200 gins - all distilled in Scotland - were blind tasted this year and medals awarded in 11 categories. Persie Labrador Gin is just like the breed: traditional, mellow, soft in the mouth and warming. It is fresh and playful up front, then soft and warming once it settles. What makes it traditional is bags of juniper up front and on the nose, then cardamom and coriander pop up when you add tonic to make it soft and warming. It’s strange how the advice to drink eight glasses of water a day seems impossible to achieve – but six glasses of gin at a tasting? That goes down like a chubby kid on a see-saw.” Take a trip to Glenshee

Serve with a light tonic to keep it dry, or sweeten with hibiscus tonic. Tear up a few basil leaves and drop in the glass. Or try a Red Snapper: just add tomato juice and Tabasco, then float a little Fino sherry on the top. Like the breed, this is spicy and lively on the palate with a gentle coating (made with nutmeg and cinnamon). Persie creates aromatic, distinctive gins from its distillery at the base of Glenshee. Gayle Ritchie meets founders Chrissie and Simon Fairclough (and the dogs who’ve inspired some expressions of the tipple!) Like the breed, Labrador Gin is traditional, mellow, soft in the mouth and warming. It is fresh and playful up front, then soft and warming once it settles.

One of my go-to gins is Shortcross Gin from Northern Ireland’s Rademon Estate Distillery, a classic London Dry gin with lovely buttery and floral notes. If this sounds like something you'd like to know more about then a trip to the distillery is a must. You also get a free sample or a miniature bottle of Edinburgh Gin to take home. Booking is essential as weekend availability is limited.

If you’re choosing the Three Gin Kit and you’d like a mix of Distillery Originals and Dog Gins, that’s no problem. Just choose ‘My Preferred Mix’ and note the gins you’d like in the box below. And whichever kit you decide on, if there’s a mixer you particularly like or don’t like, just let us know. Travelling north on the A93, pass the Bridge of Cally Hotel on your left and drive straight on for 1.5 miles. Continue for 200 yards past the drive with the ‘Persie’ sign and it is the white house and steading immediately on your left. Follow the brown tourist sign instead of the sat nav!

The visitor centre offers three great tours: a Gin Discovery tour, Gin Connoisseur tour and the Gin Making tour. Owners of Persie Gin, Chrissie and Simon have focused their gin production on the adage that 75 per cent to 95 per cent of a gin’s flavour profile is based on smell, creating a Zesty Citrus Gin, a Herby & Aromatic one and their Sweety and Nutty Old Tom Gin. Step 3: Find a favourite picture. This could be of your friend or family member, their much loved holiday destination, their dog, cat or budgie! Ideally the picture should be in portrait format, but we can work with most of what we’re sent. One thing worth remembering, though – dark colours won’t print as well on a label. Upload your image using the link below. (*NOTE If you are choosing the Wordle or Keep Calm designs you don’t need to upload anything.)

The ultimate award, Scottish Gin Distillery of the Year, was presented for a second year in a row to North Uist Distillery. They also collected the award for Best New Product of the Year for their Downpour Coast & Croft Gin. The results are highly regarded as they are independently audited by a panel of experts and judged live in a rigorously assessed blind tasting event. When the Summerhall Distillery opened its doors in 2014, they became the first gin distillery to be established in Edinburgh for over 150 years. The tour concludes with a full tasting of the distillery's gins, vodka and rum, and a drink of choice will be poured to enjoy with a selection of canapés.
