coprolites". Dictionary.com. Archived from the original on 17 December 2008 . Retrieved 29 February 2012. Mold Fossils form when all the parts (including the bones) have decayed, and all that is left is the mold of the animal. Robert Hooke (1635–1703) included micrographs of fossils in his Micrographia and was among the first to observe fossil forams. His observations on fossils, which he stated to be the petrified remains of creatures some of which no longer existed, were published posthumously in 1705. [93] looking at fossils of plants and animals may help children see that fossils are not 'bits of bones' but were once living creatures.

Permineralization is a process of fossilization that occurs when an organism is buried. The empty spaces within an organism (spaces filled with liquid or gas during life) become filled with mineral-rich groundwater. Minerals precipitate from the groundwater, occupying the empty spaces. This process can occur in very small spaces, such as within the cell wall of a plant cell. Small scale permineralization can produce very detailed fossils. [13] For permineralization to occur, the organism must become covered by sediment soon after death, otherwise the remains are destroyed by scavengers or decomposition. [14] The degree to which the remains are decayed when covered determines the later details of the fossil. Some fossils consist only of skeletal remains or teeth; other fossils contain traces of skin, feathers or even soft tissues. [15] This is a form of diagenesis. Mary Anning". Lyme Regis Museum.
