We asked 295 testers to trial a range of the top beard trimmers and hair clippers for two to three weeks. They assessed each one on how well it cut hair and how easy it was to store and clean. They also considered its accessories, battery life, charge-up time, noise level and design. To look after a long beard, you’ll need to give it consistent care and attention. As with stubble, regular washing is key. Make sure to cleanse your beard thoroughly using a gentle beard shampoo or cleanser. This will effectively remove dirt, debris, and excess oils without stripping away the natural oils that keep your beard healthy. Hair clippers have bigger blades, and trimmers smaller ones to allow them to cut closer to the skin.

Can't decide what type of grass trimmer to go for? Read our should you buy a cordless grass trimmer guide to decide if going cordless is right for you. Electric grass trimmers Look for waterproofing. It's sometimes easier to trim in the shower, as the water washes away your hair and makes it easier to cut. GuardsOur testers rate each trimmer for how it trims their facial hair, how smooth and easy to manoeuvre each trimmer is on the moustache, side of their face and on the chin, and if they irritate the skin. Whether you’re buying for yourself or the man in your life, there are a few general things to keep in mind when on the lookout for a beard trimmer or hair clipper. They noted how easy each tool was to use, whether it came with any useful attachments and design features, and how well it performed when trimming and shaving hair.

Blade sheath or guard protects the blade when carrying or storing the machine, preventing dust and dirt from getting onto the blade and blunting the cutting teeth. The shaft length is 110cm, but you can adjust it by 17cm to suit jobs. The head of the trimmer is also adjustable which means people of all heights should be able to use it easily and you can rotate it 90 degrees to turn it from a strimmer into a specialised edge tool.

Cutting against the direction your hair grows will remove more hair. Going with the direction of hair growth cuts less.

If you have a small hedge and don’t mind a little exercise, a pair of hand shears might be all you need. They're better for the environment and much quieter in use so won't disturb your neighbours. Look for a model with extendable handles to help your reach the top of your hedge. This really comes down to the size of your garden and overall convenience. Electric trimmers with a mains lead are the cheapest option, but in a big garden there are huge advantages to going wire-free. Plastic line shreds when used and scatters small pieces of plastic. There are some lines that are claimed to be biodegradable. These aren't widely available though and aren't suitable for all machines. Our testers rate every trimmer for how comfortable it is to hold, how easy it is to adjust and read the cutting length, and how easy it is to change the trimmer's combs and heads.

Most beard trimmers come with instructions and tips on the best way to trim your beard with that trimmer. Wraparound front handle with an 'on' switch that runs around the length of the handle makes it easy to change from cutting the sides or top of the hedge. Decide whether you prefer a corded or cordless trimmer. Cordless trimmers offer more freedom of movement but require regular charging. Corded trimmers provide consistent power but limit mobility. Additional Features To maintain a neat and well-groomed look, invest in a high-quality beard brush or comb. Regularly brushing or combing your stubble helps ensure an even distribution of hair, while also training the hairs to grow in the desired direction. This practice prevents any unruly patches and helps you achieve a more polished appearance. Keeping your pubic trimmer clean is crucial for maintaining hygiene and extending its lifespan. Follow these steps.
