About this deal

The whisky is 100% malted barley, aged in ex-bourbon barrels, bottled at 46% abv, and the distillery is located in Keith, Banffshire (Speyside region of Scotland). The name Aultmore is derived from the Gaelic word Ant-Allt Mor which means “big burn”. The “big burn” refers to the water source the Auchinderran Burn. A “burn” is a spring or source of water. A wonderful bottling of 12 year old Aultmore. This Speyside single malt whisky was bottled for Diageo's Flora & Fauna series in 1991. Finish: Medium finish. Slightly waxy. Still sweet. Citrus is a little more pronounced here. Some vanilla and cookiedough.

Totally agree about the presentation. Grassy hay, malt, dried fruit and light notes of chocolate, banana bread and tartness with an undertone of citric acid and honey.I expected this to be another one-dimensional Speyside whisky, but I was pleasantly surprised. The grassy, pear, vanilla combo plays well with the gentle waxiness. At 46% ABV, age stated, natural color, and NCF, this is a nice ex-bourbon matured 12 year old single malt Scotch at a reasonableprice. Nose (undiluted): this is a classic Speyside, light and floral with some green fruit notes (pears, green apples, green grapes), there's a touch of light, floral vanilla, but it's balanced by a clean (albeit brief) citrus note. Lemon and lime. It's not a bruiser like Laphroaig or Octomore, but it's very well-balanced. Aultmore flavor profile is very good but it reminds me of another whisky that I am having trouble putting my finger on. I cannot really compare it to anything else, but for some reason I am reminded of the Bruchladdich Laddie, but that is a real stretch. I think my mind is comparing it more to its standalone flavor profile rather than their similarity.

In 2015, John Dewar & Sons launched the “Last Great Malts” collection in an effort to be more competitive in the growing single malt market. Among the line-up were three Aultmore releases – a 12 year old, a 21 year old travel retail exclusive, and a 25 year old limited release. An 18 year old was introduced at a laterdate. Spring in a glass: grassy, lemon, green apple, hops, and freshly cut flowers. A bit sweeter after a while with apple juice, limoncello and malt sugars, but also some coriander, fresh laundry and kiwi's appear. Long and oaky with echoes of malty sweetness. Aultmore was once found mostly in the blended whiskies of John Dewar & Sons (Dewar's White Label, Dewar's 12 Year Old, Dewar's 18 Year Old). It was rarely enjoyed on its own.

Evocative prose, indeed. Aultmore 12 Years is another release in Dewars’ Last Great Malts lineup and comes from a distillery that’s been quietly pumping out whisky in the central Speyside region of Scotland for over 100 years. It was built in 1896 by Alexander Edward who also owned Benrinnes and added Oban to his stable of distilleries just one year after Aultmore came online. Whiskybase B.V. Nose: fresh and lively, with some biscuity aromas and green fruits. Granny Smith apples, unripe pear, light citrus, green leafy notes. Also bright flowers and just a hint of wax. Rather delicate but very uplifting.
