We would have liked to have seen a higher-resolution LCD screen, though, with the 2.7 inch, 230K fixed screen looking rather under-specced compared to the competition and also the next model up the Canon range.

The bright viewfinder has 95% coverage and a magnification factor of 0.8x. Dioptre adjustment ranges from -2.5 to +0.5 The EOS 1100D has a rather small (2.7 inch) and low-resolution (230k dot) fixed LCD screen, one of the main ways that it achieves its budget price-point. The bright Pentamirror optical viewfinder offers 95% coverage of the scene, 0.80x magnification and dioptre control for glasses wearers. Depth of Field Preview is available when assigned to the SET button via Custom Function 8-5. Warranty does not cover any external accessories (such as battery, cable, carrying bag), damage caused to the product due to improper installation by customer. Like all EOS models, the 1100D records in both JPEG and CR2 raw format, and images measure 4272×2848 pixels at their highest resolution. The 14-bit Digic 4 processor, found in all other current Canon DSLRs, is an improvement over the last generation 12-bit processor found in the 1000D and should ensure fine colour reproduction. To process raw files, the camera comes with Canon’s excellent Digital Photo Professional software. The Canon EOS 1100D / Rebel T3 is a small and light DSLR camera with an all-plastic shell, weighing in at just under 500g with the battery and memory card fitted and measuring 129.9 x 99.7 x 77.9 mm. In terms of build quality, the Canon EOS 1100D / T3 feels more than solid enough for an entry-level DSLR, on par with the more expensive 600D but as you'd expect not in the same league as the semi-professional EOS 60D and 7D models. It has a narrow, mildly uncomfortable hand-grip that unfortunately doesn't have any textured surface to aid your grip, with the entire body finished in an appealingly glossy but rather too smooth finish. Like all of Canon's APS-C digital SLR cameras, the EOS 1100D / T3 is compatible with the manufacturer's entire line-up of lenses, including both EF and EF-S glass. When changing lenses, EF lenses need to be aligned with the red dot on the lens mount, whereas EF-S lenses must be aligned with the white mark.The picture quality and clarity is amazing. It is very easy to use even for a first timer with SLRs (like me). You do not need a guide book to know what are the various options that are there in the camera. The Canon EOS 1100D's maximum shutter speed is 30 seconds and there's a Bulb mode for even longer exposures, which is excellent news if you're seriously interested in night photography. The shot below was taken using a shutter speed of 30 seconds, aperture of f/8 at ISO 100. Here is a 100% crop of the image to show what the quality is like. The memory card slot is now found in the battery compartment on the bottom of the camera, and is compatible with SD, SDHC and SDXC cards Auto depth-of-field mode is designed to keep multiple subjects in focus by measuring the distance from the nearest to the furthest and then calculating an aperture-shutter speed combination with just enough depth-of-field to keep them all sharp. In theory it’s a good idea, especially if you have a group of people at different distances all of whom you’d like to keep in focus. That said, you do need to exercise caution with it and keep a close eye on your ISO settings as the camera may choose a slower shutter speed than you can realistically shoot handheld. In addition, the camera doesn’t always choose the AF points that you want it to. Canon EOS cameras have had an easily navigated menu system for a while now, and current EOS users will be right at home here. As with the 60D and new 600D, the 1100D has a handy image-rating system in place: when images are imported to a computer, the star rating helps to organise files.

This is also seen in the low light performance of the camera. Dimly lit subjects can be captured with minimum image noise and without resorting to the flash by changing ISO, bulb and shutter speed settings. The settings within the camera can be used to optimize the lighting levels around the subject in focus. The Canon EOS 1100D / Rebel T3 has 2 different JPEG file quality settings available, including Fine and Normal, with Fine being the higher quality option. Here are two 100% crops which show the quality of the two options. Fine (4.33Mb) (100% Crop)The 1100D's control layout is actually very similar to the 600D, with a few changes that for the most part make more sense for the beginner target audience. Virtually all of the important controls are located together at the right-hand side of the rear of the camera, rather than more liberally scattered around the body, which allows for a more straight-forward transition from compact to DSLR. Taking advantage of the extra room allowed by the smaller, fixed LCD screen, the buttons are also larger than on the 600D, again another subtle and effective concession to the 1100D's market. All of the buttons are clearly labelled but, being flush to the body, can be a little hard to press at times. We did miss the 600D's top-mounted ISO control, though, which has been rather inexplicably replaced by the release button for the pop-up flash. The high performing DIGIC 4 image processor allows you to freeze fast paced action and take remarkable images at 12.2 megapixels. This CMOS sensor is well suited for high speed photography as well as relatively high performances across low light conditions. Despite being nice and bright, the viewfinder is noticeably small and covers 95% of the scene, meaning the final image will contain a little bit more than you see through the viewfinder. Looking through the viewfinder you’ll find nine AF points spread across the screen that light up as red dots, depending on which is being used as a focus point. Basic shooting information – including shutter speed, aperture, metering and ISO – is displayed underneath the viewfinder.
