At the urging of his Soviet handlers, Philby worked as a journalist then joined MI6, the British intelligence agency, during World War II. In 1944, he became head of the agency’s anti-Soviet intelligence operations, all the while passing secrets to the KGB. Five years later, in 1949, he was made the MI6 station chief in Washington, D.C., where he served as the main liaison between British and American intelligence agencies. The Spymaster says that he will often go on operations and end up in entirely the wrong place with the wrong people at the wrong time, but always much wiser. Through such coincidences, history is often more explicable to the ordinary man than a lot of complicated analysis. We found "filling-in-the-gaps analysis" to be a primary cause of ill-informed history. As such, Hallett and the Spymaster have teamed up to give you riveting insights into how the enemies of war are created and how enemies work together to prolong and expand wars.

In 1951, two of his friends and fellow British operatives defected to Moscow after Philby warned them they were about to be exposed as double agents. Philby was suspected of tipping them off but MI6 officials stood by their charming colleague and no charges were brought against him. In the wake of the scandal, Philby resigned from MI6; however, the agency later rehired him and in 1956 sent him to Beirut, where as a cover he again worked as a journalist. Then, in early 1963, after learning British officials had discovered convincing new evidence he’d spied for the Soviets, Philby escaped to Russia. He died there in 1988 and received a funeral with a KGB honor guard as well as other tributes including his own postage stamp. 5. Denis Donaldson: An Irish Republican Army member murdered for being a British spy The Duke was subjected to heavy pressure from many quarters to stay in Europe, where the Germans hoped that he would exert influence against the policy of His Majesty's government. The IRA denied responsibility for his murder, and leaders of Sinn Fein denounced the killing publicly. In 2009 the splinter group the Real IRA claimed they had killed Donaldson.

The German Commander-in-Chief, Field Marshal Gerd von Rundstedt, was one of those taken in, even to the extent of overruling a proposal from General Erwin Rommel that his divisions should move from the Pas de Calais to assist the defence in Normandy. As the Official History of British Intelligence in WW2 comments, their "intervention in the Normandy battle really might have tipped the balance". Macintyre wrote that recently released wartime archives in Britain revealed an extraordinary conversation between Chapman and Ronnie Reed, his case officer. Since then, I have worked for British intelligence and the RUC/PSNI Special Branch. Over that period I was paid money.” Less than four months after this admission, Donaldson was murdered. He was shot with a shotgun at point-blank range. In 1941 when the Germans were all-powerful in Spain, the British Embassy in Madrid was being stoned, France had collapsed and the German invasion was imminent, little were the Germans to know that the small meek young Spaniard who then approached them volunteering to go to London to engage in espionage on their behalf would turn out to be a British agent. Still less were they to discover that the network which they instructed him to build up in the UK was to be composed of 27 characters who were nothing more than a figment of the imagination."This was the third and last of the agents recruited by GARBO whilst he was operating in Lisbon. He was represented as having been educated in the University of Glasgow and was still in the U.K. at the outbreak of war. Though his exact means of livelihood were never disclosed, the impression was given that he was a man of means, whose family had properties in Venezuela, one near Comuna and another in Caracas.

A boy from Belfast, who was an IRA volunteer before the Provos even existed. Best friends with republican martyrs and right-hand man to the movement’s leaders. Ironically, GARBO's reputation among the Germans was enhanced by the whole D-Day affair. On 29 July 1944 he was informed that he had been awarded the Iron Cross by the Führer himself, for his "extraordinary services" to Germany. By return message Pujol and Harris expressed GARBO's "humble thanks" for such an honour, for which he was truly "unworthy". The case against Donaldson collapsed on 8 December 2005, with the Public Prosecution Service declaring it to not be “in the public interest” to proceed. His Royal Highness never wavered in his loyalty to the British cause … The German records are necessarily a much tainted source. The only firm evidence which they provide is of what the Germans were trying to do in the matter, and of how completely they failed to do it.
