About this deal

A record number of people watched England battle valiantly against Italy in the Euro 2020 final and now the Olympics means that many of us are gathering round our telly to see team GB win medal after medal (hopefully). Colours, contrast and how much light you see being emitted from the screen are all affected by the angle you're sitting at. Usually, the more severe the angle, the more severe the loss of quality. There’s Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) for automatically putting the TV into its Game mode when it detects a gaming signal, while the HGiG standard improves HDRtone-mapping for a more consistent performance. I did notice more detail in the darker parts of an image than I remember seeing before.

The 4K TVs with the best viewing angle - Which? News

Somewhat disappointingly, that’s not the case this year. For 2021, LG has introduced a new ‘OLED Evo’ panel that promises increased brightness and sharpness, and to get the Evo panel you have to step up to the G1. That’s slightly disappointing because you also end up paying extra for a rather niche design that you may not want. The question of whether you should buy the G1 over the C1 will remain until we can test the latter, but the G1 takes the picture performance of last year’s GX and CX and improves upon it in almost every way without introducing any flaws. That makes it comfortably the best LG OLED that we’ve so far tested, and that is saying something. It’s tonally balanced and consistent, too – where many TVs have a gap in the lower-midrange where the main drivers hand off to the subwoofer, the G1 is smooth and even, resulting in an unexpectedly natural richness to dialogue. It also doesn’t suffer from the flappy woofer problem of last year’s CX models when faced with extremely low bass, such as that in Blade Runner 2049.If you comeacross a different type of panel or your LG G1 doesn't correspond to our review, let us know, and we'll update the review. Note that some tests like gray uniformity may vary between individual units.

LG OLED65G1 Evo OLED TV review | What Hi-Fi?

For the majority of the time, provided you’re careful about how you set it up the LG G1 sounds impressive. Next, we measure for luminance and colour changes at 10-degree horizontal intervals up to 55 degrees, and 10-degree vertical intervals up to 30 degrees.

There are, of course, people who won't use the AI Picture Pro mode because they don't like the idea of a TV's processor taking over the way a picture looks. And for those people the OLED G1 still supports all the calibration tools and accuracy of other recent LG generations. The much improved AI Picture Pro is very much worth trying for most users, though. The best soundbars for small TVs can bring you big sound from a compact unit and make speech clearer Since it’s at the heart of the LG G1’s appeal, let’s get straight into the nitty gritty of what apparently makes its new ‘evo’ panel so special.

T3 Awards LG G1 (OLED65G1) review: the best OLED TV at the T3 Awards

As usual with a premium LG TV, the OLED G1 supports the Dolby Vision and HLG formats of high dynamic range (HDR) technology, alongside the industry standard HDR10 format. There is no support for the rarer (in source terms) HDR10+ format.

For most people, though, little tweaking will be necessary. Dolby Vision content will by default activate the Dolby Vision Cinema Home preset and AI Brightness Setting, and that equates to a Dolby Vision IQ performance. It’s well worth leaving these settings as they are, as the performance is in line with our expectations of Dolby Vision, and the IQ element improves dark detail when viewing in a well-lit room without tampering with the performance under ideal conditions.
