Another Anna Dewdney favorite, this time for dads! An involved and doting father helps his daughter build a playhouse out of a cardboard box, takes her to the store, gives her a ride on his shoulders and makes dinner. A great daddy-daughter book with the same great illustrations as the llama llama series. Submitted by: Kirsten Eamon-Shine, Early Learning Indiana Director of Statewide Communication & EngagementThis story uses rhythm and rhyme known to help establish math skills. It also is a story that exemplifies compassion and family love.” – Dawn Johnson, Day Early Learning Quality Coach I Love You Because You’re You Ease of Use: Make sure your child's toy is easy to use for both you and your child. You want to make sure the toy is lightweight enough for your toddler to carry and lift, and that the features are appropriate and easy for them to use. It's also important that it can be wiped clean and stored away when your child isn't playing with it. Kristin Morency Goldman, senior advisor of strategic communications for The Toy Association, an industry organization that represents hundreds of manufacturers and retailers dedicated to championing the benefits of play.

A timeless classic perfect for the toddler crowd. Caldecott Medal-winning picture book Where the Wild Things Are tells the tale of a boy named Max who was sent to bed after making mischief of one kind or another. This list of books is a must-have selection of familiar classics you probably read when you were little and new favourites that definitely deserve a place on your nursery’s bookcase:

You'll want to make sure that the toys you choose are fun and developmentally appropriate. Children this age are intrigued by colors, sounds, and textures. But they also like to put things in their mouths, so choose toys that are safe and easy to keep clean. All of them worked very hard to grow the broccoli. Jimmy watered his garden, Bobby uprooted the weeds, Spivy gobbled the flies, and Pappy drove the caterpillars out of the garden. Finally, the broccolis were ready and Jimmy shared them with his friends. All of them had a grand broccoli feast. If your child has trouble falling, or staying, asleep, then this might be a solution. The Settle & Sleep Soother easily attaches to a crib, but can also be placed on a tabletop for older kids. It features 30 minutes of music and sound that transition to white noise. There's also a projection of images on the ceiling or wall for a soothing light show that will lull them to bed before you know it. One BabyCentre parent said:"I highly recommend ‘The Tractor Who Wants to Fall Asleep’. I only have to read the first half of the book before they're fast asleep now." I feel like she definitely had some favorites from 12-18 months old but once she passed 18 months she got into books in a WHOLE differently level and really started memorizing, pointing things out and gravitated towards some longer books and it opened the door to a lot of new favorites — especially as she approached 2 years old!

There is a whole series of Mog books which explore various different themes and aspects of childhood. Where Is Baby’s Belly Button? by Karen Katz My daughter loves listening to me read this book or reading the book to herself. She loves acting out the different things she sees in the illustrations. It has helped her prepare for potty training so much.” – Trisha Satterfield, Pre-K Teacher at Day Early Learning at Phalen Leadership Academy Raindrop, Plop There’s just something about keys—little kids love them. To ensure your set doesn’t go missing, give toddlers their own special set of keys they can chew on, rattle, and carry around. In addition to the eye-catching colors, these baby-safe keys have a realistic design and a functional remote that emits car sounds and turns on a flashlight.

I’ve broken them up into two groups: 12-18 months and 18-24 months just to show the difference and progression in the ones she really got into once her language really exploded and she understood so much more at 18 months. The book sees a group of siblings go hunting for bears. They have to cross through mud and puddles, making funny sounds as they go. So obviously Riley can’t dictate this list of her favorites but I clearly know which books she gravitated to all year and which ones made her happy so you’ll just have to trust my observation skills and judgment.
