My usual is a 3 pass shave. I currently have a Merkur 38C with Astra Green blades. I use a finest badger. I face lather by loading the soap on my face directly and then, I build the lather. So we’re down two great soaps from Italy ( Cella Almond& Cella Aloe) and another great shaving soap from England ( Stirling). What’s next? So, the tallow version seems more stable but to be honest, since the lather isn't staying on my skin without a shave for that long, it doesn't really affect the end-result.

I have read enough on this forum to be able to paint, what I consider, a pretty accurate picture of the new Tabac. The texture of this soap is very interesting, to say the least. It isn’t bad by any stretch of the imagination at all. Made in Germany, Tabac Original shaving soap has been popular with wet shavers since the 1950s and is formulated to soften beard hair and facilitate an easy and close shave. Gently fragranced with the Tabac signature scent, a classic, masculine blend of floral notes, peppery-spicy accents and exotic woods. Presented in smart, branded bowl with lid. So, at the end of the day, I believe that I have moderate to hard water since the city is publishing something every year. Potassium Stearate, Sodium Stearate, Potassium Laurate, Sodium Laurate, Glycerin, Aqua, Parfum, Lauric Acid, Limonene, Linalool, Hydroxycitronellal, CI 77891, Isoeugenol, Pentasodium Pentetate, Tetrasodium Etidronate, Citronellol, Coumarin, Benzyl Alcohol, Alpha-Isomethyl Ionone, Geraniol, Benzyl Salicylate, Cinnamyl Alcohol, Citral, Eugenol.The rich lather and texture are very nice and soft, perfect for a safety razor and several days worth of growth. Honestly, I do not smell it. To me, it is very overly floral and sweet. It smells like old people. It is the same fragrance I get when visiting my grandparents’ house where I can’t touch anything and have to be on my best behavior. Overall, if you are already a fan of this soap, then the smell is not going to turn you off at all. If you aren’t already a Tabac user, there is very little reason to jump over to a new soap. The refills are inexpensive, but not something that you really should try if you aren’t already looking for something new. I’m indifferent to the use of tallow. If a soap doesn’t include it but still produces a good shave, that’s great. But in this instance, I believe dropping the tallow was a mistake.

According to online posts, the formula changed because M&W’s tallow provider went out of business in late 2020. M&W’s media department did not respond to my questions about the formula change so I can’t confirm this but the information appears solid. Because of the dense nature of the soap, I erred on the side of using more water than normal and giving it extra time to charge up.IMO, the demise of traditional mass produced tallow based hard shave soaps is a loss. I bemoan the marketeers being put in charge of the firms that used to make these soaps. This is yet another manifestation of finance capitalism swallowing up whole our heritage of industrial capitalism. Okay, my plan is to shave for 30 days with the new formulation and alternate with the old formulation for 1 shave only every week or so. I might switch from a boar to a badger to a synthetic brush but I will try to keep the same setup for at least a week. That way, I should be able to keep a consistent result. Funnily enough, Germany is more commonly known for making shaving razors and brushes, not necessarily soaps. Though the same kind of superior engineering you would get from most German products is definitely on display here.

That is a HUGE word-salad there. Most of it doesn’t look out of place for professionally made soap, but I would prefer a few less “sciency” words in the list. Overall though, there is nothing that really jumps out at me except for the Benzyl Alcohol and the Citronellol. It is much thinner, of course. However, it will still be more than enough for you to shave with a safety razor and be protected. How is the Texture?
