About this deal

I received this via Goodreads Giveaways in exchange for an honest review. All my opinions are my own. I am a huge fan of psychological thrillers and I was extremely happy to come upon this gem. I was very much into the book, but after the unexpected twist in the middle of the story - I was not able to put this book down. With hope in her heart, she looks through the stone and tries to find something that might be a soul. Carol Goodman's The Other Mother is a psychological thriller that explores the difficulties of two new mothers, Laurel and Daphne, who meet at a mother-baby group. In danger? thought Coraline to herself. It sounded exciting. It didn't sound like a bad thing. Not really."

Outside, the world had become a formless, swirling mist with no shapes or shadows behind it, while the house itself seemed to have twisted and stretched. […] The problem for me started with the audio book. One of the narrators I began to have a real issue with and her reading highlighted what became a sore spot for me in the text, which was specifically the dialogue. It began to lean into near melodrama at times, characters wearing their hearts on their sleeves, especially at emotionally charged moments which increased in frequency as the book progressed. Her husband was supportive to a point, but then Daphne was worried he would take the baby away from her because he didn't think she was capable of taking care of their child. The mist hung like blindness around the house. She walked slowly to the stairs up to her family’s flat, and then stopped and looked around.

I love the way this story is told in a chapter from each person in Jenry’s life. The novel is full of reflective thought underscored by love about what makes a family and how hurtful actions are taken in the name of love. It is a beautifully written book. Comedian Jen Brister writes about her personal experience of motherhood from the time she and her partner Chloe decide to have children, through the birth of their twin sons and those early sleepless nights, up to the boys reaching four years old. She shares the highs and lows of that time, the expectations of others and also her own misguided expectations, and how what she has learned in that time has shaped her current perspective. I did enjoy Brister’s snide comments on preachy parents and mumfluencers- as an absolute cynic, I’m here for that! If Coraline loses she'll stay in the other world forever and be the other mother's daughter. But if Coraline wins, the other mother has to let Coraline, her parents, and the other three children go. Daphne married, had a baby, and had Postpartum symptoms that caused her to not be happy and have thoughts of harming the baby.

The ending after everything that had gone on was a bit of a letdown... it felt unfinished and abrupt. It did fix one final question but it felt like we were left dangling in a way too.
