About this deal

It’s a helluva start to the book which sets a standard that the other stories unfortunately don’t match with each one becoming slightly less inspired than the last. They’re all good stories but none measure up to the chilling brilliance of Our Neighbor’s House. Helpless Window Death: The story "My Friend Janna" climaxes with Yvonne watching helplessly from outside Janna's house as Janna is apparently murdered in front of her window by the "ghost" that has been haunting Janna. a b c d Collins, Sean T. (5 December 2011). "Emily Carroll's His Face All Red and Other Stories headed to boookstores via Simon & Schuster". Comic Book Resources . Retrieved 5 November 2020. Parental Abandonment: Justified. The three girls' mother died before the story started, and their father soon follows by going out hunting in the woods during a snowstorm. Heterosexual Life-Partners: Janna and Yvonne. Yvonne says Janna is like a sister to her or more, since she doesn't get along with her own sister as well as she does with her friend.

As Craig Thompson ( Blankets, Habibi) has already pointed out, Carroll's talent is immense: the mood of these stories is Brothers Grimm by way of Patricia Highsmith or Stephen King, while her drawings, so fluidly lavish and atmospheric, seem to channel Edward Gorey (like Gorey, many of her narratives are set in the past, her heroines struggling not only with ghouls and ghosts but with long skirts or, in the case of Bell, the clipped, superficial manners of the flapper 20s). in a way, it kind of reminded me of fear(s) of the dark, a film in which several different illustrators bring their own brand of creepy to life through unique animation stylings: Cette bande dessinée se compose de 5 contes angoissants avec un graphisme plein d’imagination : un voyage dans les bois sombres où se tapissent toujours les plus étranges créatures. Ce recueil graphique a obtenu le prix Eisner 2015 dans la catégorie « Meilleur album graphique – réimpression ». En savoir plus […] I wish it had worked for me, but it just didn’t. Not to say that it won’t work for you, this is a very beloved story collection. Give it a try! I am in the minority here when it comes to this story collection, let me know what you think!Carroll won two Eisner Awards in 2015: one in the "Best Graphic Album-Reprint" category for Through the Woods, and one in the " Best Short Story" category for When the Darkness Presses. Serves the silly girl right,” is reported to have said Mrs Bennett when she heard of poor Janna's demise.) Never Say "Die": The story itself never directly mentions death, only alluding to it via characters suddenly disappearing after meeting the man with the wide-brimmed hat.

Monster Is a Mommy: "Rebecca" is actually a mass of worms inside Rebecca's stolen skin and wants Bell's skin for her children, so they can leave their spawning pool. Bell seizes on this and saves herself by horrifying the monster with stories of the dangers its children would face in the city. It came from the woods. Most strange things do.’ Five mysterious, spine-tingling stories follow journeys into (and out of?) the eerie abyss. These chilling tales spring from the macabre imagination of acclaimed and award-winning comic creator Emily Carroll. Come take a walk in the woods and see what awaits you there… Through the Woods by Emily Carroll – eBook Details I See Dead People: Yvonne can see something like a ghost that is haunting Janna which nobody else seems to notice. At the end of the story, after Janna has either died or disappeared, Yvonne's little sister sees one too, now haunting Yvonne instead...

and it's also in the running for top story (along with our neighbor's house). this one reads more like a fairy tale than the others; a little hint of bluebeard but with fewer wives, more property damage, and much less gratitude.

Reviewer Spotlight: Where I spotlight one of my friends that deserve attention and who doesn't attention seek with the review bumps. I reread this book because I reviewed and shared some of Emily Carroll's free short stories here for Halloween, and because I read Speak: The Graphic Novel, which she illustrated for Laurie Halse Anderson. Now, more than two years after I initially read it, I am feeling Carroll's groove. I wasn't as appreciative as I am now. I think she is one of the truly talented and smart and entertaining horror illustrators out there.
