So I went into this one with a lot of excitement. And it’s…fine. Just fine. Pileggi’s style is much more to my liking than Charles Brandt’s is. It’s structured the same way but Pileggi is a seasoned veteran; he knows what’s appropriate for the subject to share and what he needs to editorialize. First, the it was slightly more fast paced than I expected, with a couple of exceptions here and there. There's always something going on, and it's kinda insane how much these guys were being watched and followed by the police without getting arrested for anything relevant. Honestly, really makes evident the way the mob was just this HUGE organization, and a very untouchable one at that. Specially at the end, when we read about the leaders just offing guys they specifically said were loyal to the end, just because they couldn't take risks. Good Fellas. I enjoyed Pileggi’s other true crime mafia tale Wiseguy, which was the basis for the movie Goodfellas. People don't stop watching and reading shit and some of them writing shit... but some are very good writers... some movies are marvelous and make great impact in people's life. So I would actually be more likely to recommend this to someone who’s never seen Goodfellas, who can appreciate the sheer outlandishness of this memoir. Henry Hill, in collaboration with Nicholas Pileggi, wrote this book after he’d been placed in witness protection after ratting out the other members of his New York mafia family – so at that point, he’d already burned all his bridges and had nobody left to protect and nothing much left to lose. This means that he shares everything in this memoir, detailing the murders, the robberies, the drugs, the affairs, the betrayals…it’s all here, and it’s all just on the safe side of completely unbelievable. I read this book because of how much I love "Goodfellas," and I was not at all disappointed. Overall, the book parallels the film "Goodfellas" quite well. There are famed film lines that are pulled directly from quotes in the book, which furthers the authenticity that I see in the film. The book is an excellent crime saga, like the movie.If you asking what type of shit is happing around Las Vegas... Casinos... here you can find the truth... the question is easy do you have the guts?" A million years ago I watched the movie Casino because its a Martin Scorsese movie and I've seen all his movies. I waited for this book for a long time. Watched my favorite movie "Goodfellas" based on this book several times. So when I got the hard copy of the book, I could not resist myself finishing it at once. It is As good as the movie. But if someone watches the movie, the book is waste of time in my opinion. The movie is a total honest representation of the book. But my case is different. I love to read about Mafia. :)
