About this deal

July 1660 Proceedings of Regicides, British History On-line House of Commons Journal Volume 8 (www.british-history.ac.uk) Harris was a columnist for The Sunday Times, but gave it up in 1997. He returned to journalism in 2001, writing for The Daily Telegraph. [26] He was named "Columnist of the Year" at the 2003 British Press Awards. [27] Personal life [ edit ] In 1660 Richard Nayler is obsessed with hunting down two men he considers responsible for the murder of King Charles I. The story is full of atmosphere & Harris creates a brilliant sense of time & place.

Reading Paulette Jiles' revenge western Chenneville, it's easy to remember she's a poet. She plays ...So this is a negative review, however 3 stars are given. The pluses were the writing style was excellent, it wasn’t a drag to read to the point of grumbling, sighing, or eye-rolling. It had just enough to read large sections at a time. Robert Harris (“ Enigma”, “ Pompeii”, “ Fatherland”) is a hugely successful and experienced writer of historical fiction and thrillers and it shows. The author leads us through a fast paced, detailed, historically atmospheric story, always in control of his material, a master storyteller at the height of his powers. Quality assured, there are two aspects of this book that I’m going to look at here, for no other reason than that I find them extremely interesting. Harris continues: "I took a real-life event - Whalley and Goffe bursting into a church on Christmas Day in 1657 during a Nativity service - and it was easy to imagine Nayler sitting in the congregation."

The real condition of humanity is generally struggle and one can't help but feel that we're moving into upheaval - another reason I'm drawn to writing about the English Civil War, the greatest upheaval this country ever went through." Richard Nayler is committed, determined and totally single minded - a true zealot , who is determined to bring to justice all 59 signatories of the death warrant of Charles 1. His prime targets, Colonel Edward Whalley and his son-in-law, Colonel William Goffe have fled to America where they are hidden by Puritan sympathisers. Aug 1660 Pardon and Oblivion, British History On-line House of Commons Journal Volume 8 (www.british-history.ac.uk)He took a while to reply. By the time he spoke the men had gone inside. He said quietly, "They killed the King." Of all his novels, Act Of Oblivion is perhaps the most morally ambiguous, reflecting its author's own conflicted emotions.

Modern republicans should take note: despite his instinct towards parliamentary democracy, Harris believes the need for a figurehead remains compelling. The Indemnity and Oblivion Act fulfilled the suggestion given in the Declaration of Breda that reprisals against the establishment which had developed during the English Interregnum would be restricted to those who had officiated in the regicide of King Charles I.
