About this deal

The history of the Japanese whisky is not even a century old, but in this short time, the Japanese blended and single malts have taken over the world by storm and can easily go against their whisk(e)y counterparts from across the globe. The expressions are available from select retailers including Harrods, The Whisky Exchange and The Whisky Shop. Surrounded by lush nature, the distillery benefits from abundant water filtered through the granite layers fed by the Ojira and Jingu rivers, and a humid microclimate with four distinct seasons favoring the aging of whiskies. House of Suntory 100th Anniversary Editions - The Whisky Exchange

In February 1899, Shinjiro Torii — the father of Japanese Whisky — opened a general store in Osaka, Japan, that traded in imported wines. Within a decade, Torii began producing his own sweet grape wine called Akadama Port Wine, which became wildly popular throughout the country. Following World War I, Torri — fascinated by whisky his entire life — decided to expand his business and began constructing the Yamazaki Distillery, Japan's first-ever whiskey distillery. Palate: Oaky with notes of custard, syrup, stem ginger, bramble leaves, watermelon, hints of cut hay and pine resin. Second-generation master blender Keizo Saji founded the Hakushu distillery in 1973, located in Hokuto in the Yamanashi prefecture. The most popular Japanese single malt in the world was also the first. Yamazaki 12 is primarily made up of whisky aged in American oak and ex-bourbon casks, with trace amounts of whisky coming from Olorosso or Mizunara casks. For Westerners, this lends it a slightly more familiar flavor — at least initially. What follows are the rich, standard markers for Japanese whisky: delicate fruit, light spice and a long, sherry-driven finish.Meanwhile, the new Hakushu 18 Year Old Peated Malt is comprised of malt whiskies all aged for a minimum of 18 years. The new expression is said to offer a ‘new angle to the world of peated whisky’. No partnership, joint venture, agency, or employment relationship is created as a result of your use of the Service.

Yamazaki. Hakushu. Hibiki. When a Westerner thinks of Japanese whisky, they think of names under the House of Suntory. Which makes sense, of course — Shinjiro Torii’s company, founded in 1923, is Japan’s first and most popular whisky maker. But it wasn’t always that way. On the nose, the whisky offers notes of sage, ripe green apple, and hints of ripe pineapple. The palate brings a ‘complex smoky flavour’ with layers of herbal, grapefruit and acacia honey notes, and a smoky finish with undernotes of green citrus. Hakushu 18 Year Old Peated Malt offers a ‘new angle to the world of peated malt’ The discontinuation of Hibiki 17 was perhaps the biggest Japanese whisky news of 2018, and for good reason. It’s the benchmark Hibiki — an award-getting bottle that shows off the power of Japanese whisky making technique and, more specifically, the Mizunara oak tree. Although maybe not be the first Spirit you would think of when Japan is mentioned; the Japanese make one of the best types of whisky in the world. It’s heavily influenced by scotch but with smoother and delicate notes. After conquering the whisky world, Japanese distillers are ready to do it again with Japanese Gin.” Our Service is an online platform which provides Members with information (e.g. bottle facts, market-indices, market values and prices) on (mostly) whisky and allows Members to add information to the platform. We do not sell, nor does the Service provide any option to buy, any alcoholic products. Indeed, it’s this century-long story of overcoming adversity, championing innovation and centring craftsmanship that defines Japanese whisky, particularly the House of Suntory. Suntory’s distilleries, while all different in their approaches to whisky, are all defined by their respect for and pursuit of monozukuri – Japanese craftsmanship – and their meticulous approach to distilling, aging and blending fine whiskies.
