While the streaming service has previously made movies available for streaming in 4K HDR in HEVC compression, the release of the Game of Thrones prequel marks the first time a new TV show has been available on HBO Max with 3D audio and HDR. With so much anticipation for House of The Dragon, NOW has announced a special limited-time promotion. Each edition has all 10 episodes of the HBO series’ first season, along with more than an hour of bonus features, plus two more all-new featurettes. The 4K Ultra HD or Blu-ray versions will also entitle buyers to a digital copy, but only in the U.S. While House of the Dragon is available to stream on HBO Max in 4K with Dolby Vision HDR and Dolby Atmos sound, a 4K Blu-ray copy will still provide the highest-quality audio and video possible for home viewing.
‘House Of The Dragon’ Will Air In 4K On Sky – With A Catch
Now, HBO could start mastering its content in 4K HDR, like Netflix does with its live-action originals. That would allow the company to broadcast the existing 1080i standard-dynamic-range version of Game of Thrones via the linear HBO television channel, and deliver a 4K HDR feed to streaming viewers via HBO Go/Now. Unfortunately for NOW viewers, House of the Dragon won't be available to watch in 4K as the Sky streaming service does not support this format. The production on the show is to a grand scale with its costume design, sets, locations and cinematography. Each element adds to how immersive the series is and give it its own look and feel separate to Game of Thrones. The visual effects also stand out as there are many more dragons in this show, each one given its own distinctive features, and a few battle sequences that showcase the devastation dragons add to the chaos. It’s visually stunning, especially with the 4K presentation that makes everything pop, but the story is captivating even with some of the abrupt time jumps the season introduces and expects you to go along with. It emphasizes the biggest draw isn’t necessarily the schemes for the Iron Throne, but the characters and how their motivations and viewpoints put their family and friendships to the test. The features also make a point of how the creatives wanted to showcase the visual style of sets like the Red Keep and the power of the Targaryen dynasty with the architecture being more complex than Game of Thrones. Giant Targaryen statues stand in the throne room while the Iron Throne literally stretches out with more melted down swords or dragon skulls are placed with a religious-like reverence, something much different to the original series.

HBO Max in Europe has meanwhile confirmed that both GoT and House of the Dragon are now available on HBO Max in 24fps format, with the original series having previously be shown in a converted 25 frames per second with 4% speedup. The environmental and ambient sounds are excellent in this series, with subtleties even in the quietest scenes. One such subtlety can be found in Episode 1 – Chap. 4 when King Viserys is meeting with Otto Hightower and Prince Daemon walks in after a night of executions in the town. You may not have noticed this before but the sounds of falling rain create an immersive effect as if you are in the room with them.
