Lagavulin always bottles something for the Islay Jazz Festival and 2018 was no exception. This one was matured in first-fill American oak barrels, refill American oak hogsheads, and European oak puncheons. Originally there was a 12 year old expression but when Diageo launched the Classic Malt series in the 1980s, Lagavulin 16 Year Old was introduced and became the distillery's flagship bottling. To many people, Lagavulin is the definitive Islay malt and this new 10 years old expression has a charming exuberance. Ardbeg is slightly less medicinal than Laphroaig, however, it is more balanced and complex. Lagavulin has a more oily mouthfeel than the Ardbeg; however, the oiliness also seems to capture some raw alcohol notes. John Johnston founded the Lagavulin distillery in 1816, though there had been as many as ten illicit distilleries in the area since 1742. Lagavulin was home to legal distilling under Johnston’s eye, however. Shortly after it opened, a distillery named Ardmore was opened close by, though this became part of Lagavulin a few decades later. Introducing Lagavulin ‘The Ink of Legends’, a standout from the Diageo Special Releases 2023. The Islay distillery’s distinctive smokiness is amplified by a finish in Don Julio Añejo Tequila casks. It was bottled at 56.4% ABV.

Lagavulin Scotch was one of the six whiskies marketed as part of the ‘Classic Malts of Scotland’ when it was launched in 1988, and that only increased the demand. The Lagavulin distillery’s spirit stills are actually larger than the wash stills, along with a 4.4 ton stainless steel mash tun.

The finish is extremely drying with plenty of ashy smoke, warming wood spices and a flinty/chalky quality coming to the fore. These mingle to create a heady combination, especially once the sweeter elements have faded away.
