Update: Our review of the updated 2022 Legion 5 Pro is also available here (RTX 3060 model) or here for the RTX 3070Ti 2022 configuration. Compared to the gray version, this won’t show smudges and finger-oil at all, especially since the keyboard is white as well. More on the inputs in a little bit.

For GPUs, the RTX 3060 that we have here is the mid-option for this 16-inch model, as 3050Ti and 3070 configurations are available as well (we’ve already reviewed the 3070 Legion 5P over here) . Both the 3060 and the 3070 are full power dGPUs, with the 3060 able to go up to 130W with Dynamic Boost. The Legion 5 Pro is the best mid-level lineup of laptops currently available in stores, and that’s no easy feat. Over here, this tested Ryzen 7 + RTX 3060 configuration is available in stores for around 1200 EUR, which is competitive for what you’re getting. The same goes for under 1200 GBP in the UK, and around 1400 EUR in Germany. Finally, the CPUs run at ~25 W on battery as well, on the Balanced profile, with the fans still at <32 dB. The CPU performance on the battery is roughly what the system delivers on the Quiet mode when plugged in.Update2: Here’s our coverage of what looks like the 2023 successor of the Legion 5i series, the new Lenovo LOQ 15/16 lineup. Design and construction The Lenovo Legion 5 17 is a current-gen 17-inch gaming laptop and equipped with the latest AMD CPU and a powerful GPU, that manages to reach its full potential. The AMD Ryzen 5 5600H is a very good choice for this laptop and able to maintain its performance level for long periods of time. Our test model only falls behind consistently in a direct comparison with its competitors that are often equipped with eight cores and 16 threads. Despite this, the Legion 5 17 leaves an excellent impression and is almost able to keep up with an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070 mobile GPU in synthetic benchmarks thanks to its non-limited Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 mobile GPU. We were also pleased with the 17-inch display, which comes precalibrated ex-factory. This is something we would like to see more of. The 144-Hz refresh rate clearly designates the Lenovo for gaming. However, it is also well suited to video or photo editing thanks to its low deltaE-2000 values. For storage, our unit came with a fast Samsung PM981 drive and an extra slot ready for upgrades. Both M.2 slots are 2280 PCIe x4 gen3. On Quiet, the processor runs at ~25W sustained with only slightly audible fans (<32 dB) and temperatures in the 70s. The scores are roughly 75% of what the system delivers on Performance, despite the limited power. Update: If interested, here are our thoughts on the updated 2023 Lenovo Legion Pro 5i (Intel) and Legion Pro 5 (AMD) models. And here’s our detailed review of the 2023 Lenovo Legion Pro 5i (i9 + RTX 4070) model. Design and construction

The Balanced profile barely impacts the fan noise with combined loads, and the Quiet mode is the most usable option here, as it keeps the fans at around 43-44 dB with the laptop on the desk and around 40 dB with it pushed up, as the lower temperatures somehow allow for quieter fans in this case. This profile is aimed at designers who work with colors professionally, and for games and movies as well. Design and Gaming takes display panels to their limits, making them as accurate as possible in the sRGB IEC61966-2-1 standard for Web and HDTV, at white point D65. In comparison, all tested devices range from 0.1 (minimum) to 240 (maximum) ms. » 18% of all devices are better. Anyway, here’s what we got on our unit, with the screen’s brightness set at around 120 nits (~60 brightness) and 60/165 Hz refresh. The main selling points are the sturdy all-metal build, the uncompromised IO and inputs, an excellent QHD+ 16:10 165Hz screen, as well as competent specs, with a full-power RTX 3060 and an 80Wh battery.

Our sample came out rather poorly calibrated out of the box, with a skewed Gamma and White point. Once calibrated, everything looks OK, but the max brightness was also greatly diminished as a result. Take my findings with a grain of salt, though, as Derek’s unit came out better-calibrated out-of-the-box and did not reduce the brightness as aggressively when further calibrated, and we’re using the same software and sensor. There might be a degree of variation between these panels. Hardware and performance This article here goes over the AMD Ryzen 5 + RTX 3060 + FHD 165Hz configuration of the Lenovo Legion 5, and we’ll also go over a similar Legion 5 Pro variant in this article. Here’s how this Ryzen 5 Legion 5 configuration scores in comparison to other Ryzen and Intel platforms available on similar products. I’ve mostly added the 8C/16T options, for a comparison of what you’d get upgrading to the Ryzen 7 5800H on this laptop. Enjoy crisp visuals on a 39.6cms (15) FHD display, featuring amazing color accuracy and Dolby Vision™, while Nahimic 3D audio and the Legion Truestrike keyboard help you strike with pinpoint precision. Still, I can accept those in this budget range; instead, what bothers me is the inconsistency in quality control with the unit that I have, even many months after this series was launched, with the buggy wifi connection and video drivers that eat into the battery life, as well as what I still consider to be unproperly polished fan/power profiles.
