This is a staple that Costco carries every holiday season. It’s one of the many advent calendars you’ll see on the shelves. Costco has many different advent calendars: beer, wine, dog treats, wooden tree, Lego, etc. Behind each door I found an individually wrapped truffle - be it gingerbread flavour, salted caramel, hazelnut praline, or hazelnut rocher. Not a big selection in terms of flavours, however the generous size and taste of the chocolates made up for it. The giant hazelnut rocher was actually large compared to the average-sized piece of chocolate you tend to get in a chocolate advent calendar. It was so big in fact that I found it hard to get it out of the calendar door but after a bit of a wiggle, it was free and ready to be devoured with a cuppa. It had a lot of potential, but it really felt like the producers were more interested in the marketing side of things than the wine. This is especially disappointing because this is probably many people’s first introduction to many of these regions and grapes.

These include varieties such as Macabeo, Fernao Pires, Saperavi and Revener. This might be the first time I remember tasting Saperavi from Georgia. In the glass, this pours a medium purple with a dusty, earthy nose;This subtle nod to Christmas includes some of the sweetest, creamiest array of chocolates which honestly took me by surprise. I will certainly be looking out for this calendar again next year, that's for sure. Advent calendars are usually things of joy and a prelude to the Christian world's favorite time of the year, so why is Costco stirring up controversy with theirs?
