About this deal

An oxygen section on the drug chart has been designed to assist prescription and administration. Oxygen should be prescribed by a doctor in the designated section of the hospital prescription card and the appropriate target saturation should be circled on the chart. Administering oxygen (Appendix b) When anyone breathes in, air has to get from the atmosphere to our lungs. The speed in which the air moves (or flows) from the atmosphere (point A) to our lungs (point B) is known as a flow rate. Peak inspiratory flow is the fastest flow rate point on a given breath to get air from point A to point B. HFNC is more comfortable and studies have shown that using HFNC may be a better alternative than using a face mask. Some congenital heart defects can lead to an unbalanced circulation which may be made worse by administration of oxygen due to pulmonary vasodilation and subsequent systemic ischaemia. This should be considered in a baby who presents unwell in the first two weeks of life with absent or weak femoral pulses and a heart murmur and is not improving with oxygen. A swollen abdomen is sometimes known as a distended abdomen or swollen belly. A swollen abdomen is often uncomfortable or even painful, but it’s a… READ MORE

British Thoracic Society Guideline for oxygen use in adults

ensure review by a senior clinical decision maker within 3 hours of meeting a moderate to high risk criterion in an acute hospital setting for consideration of antibiotics. They are used to deliver oxygen to patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) due to the risk of type 2 respiratory failure.Observe that a partial rebreather oxygen mask will deliver 35 to 60 percent of oxygen. The flow meter will be set between 8 and 15 liters. The flow meter should never set below 8 liters. The liter flow is based on your observation of the reservoir bag. The bag must be kept half inflated. You will need to increase the liter flow if the bag is not inflated enough.

How to prescribe oxygen - Oxford Medical Education

Patients who are transferred from one area to another must have clear documentation of their ongoing oxygen requirements and documentation of their oxygen saturation. If a patient transfers from an area not utilising the target saturation system (see specialist areas above) their oxygen should be administered as per the transferring areas prescription until the patient is reviewed and transferred over to the target saturation scheme, which should occur as soon as possible. Target saturations: Pending arterial blood results, target 88-92% or those stated on patient's Oxygen Alert Card. Non-rebreathing masks are used to deliver high concentrations of oxygen in emergency situations. These masks may be used for traumatic injuries, after smoke inhalation, and in cases of carbon monoxide poisoning. Patients should be monitored accurately for signs of improvement or deterioration. Nurses should also monitor skin colour for peripheral cyanosis and respiratory rate.Table 1 Risk stratification tool for adults, children and young people aged 12 years and over with suspected sepsis Since oxygen is a drug, it must be prescribed on a drug chart (paper or electronic). Most drug charts have a section for oxygen prescribing. Royal College of Physicians. National Early Warning Score (NEWS) 2: Standardising the assessment of acute-illness severity in the NHS. Published in 2017. Available from: [ LINK] If you increase the oxygen flow rate beyond the rate recommended for the mask, it will not continue to increase FiO 2.

Use an ABCDE approach. If the patient is not breathing, call for help and commence resuscitation. This would involve inserting airway adjuncts and applying high-flow oxygen (15L/min) via bag-valve-mask ventilation.Venturi masks deliver a precise FiO 2, so are used in COPD patients as you need precise titrations of oxygen to maintain target saturations of 88-92% Ensure the reservoir bag fills by temporarily obstructing the valve before positioning the non-rebreather mask on the patient. Mechanical ventilation is used as a last resort when a patient is in severe respiratory distress and cannot tolerate non-invasive ventilation. Oximeters from different manufacturers may give different saturation readings depending on whether fractional or functional oxygen saturation is being measured. In the UK, oxygen saturations are part of the patient’s basic observations (vital signs) which make up their National Early Warning Score (NEWS). 7
