About this deal

We are grateful for the opportunity to share Dora's inspiring story with the world, and we are thrilled by the response that we have received from readers across the country. Thank you to everyone who bought a book and supported us along the way! Jorge Alvarez and I enjoyed attending the first ever Non-Sewered Sanitation Conference and traveling to Cape Town to join GreenCape for a CBS knowledge share. Looking forward to putting our knew knowledge into practice, innovating within the WASH space. Under a Zambian Treeis the inspiring and emotional account of one woman’s quest to educate and empower rural village children. Dora Moono Nyambe – or “Teacher Dora”– began with no funding and no school building, just an unwavering belief ‘that kindness should drive humanity and development.’ From preventing child marriages, navigating village politics and reaching millions of supporters online, Teacher Dora’s epic journey from mud hut to full-fledged boarding school is a testament to her incredible resilience and tenacity. Readers will not only be inspired by Dora’s story, but will finish reading feeling empowered to initiate positive change under their own “Zambian Tree.” Nyambe said she has had to negotiate with villagers to allow their children to attend school, and has rescued many girls from child marriages - often having to reimburse the families for the cost spent on their weddings. Join us today ~virtually or in person~ for the Walter Rodney Seminar Series! Dora Moono Nyambe and Joseph Schmitt will be discussing the release of Under a Zambian Tree, education and development in Zambia. 12:30pm EST (Rm 505, 232 Bay State Road - Boston University)

Unveiling “How I Thrive with ADHD as an Adult”: A Glimpse into My Self-Care and Journey October 7, 2023 I had no idea when I first started using TikTok - so I just started showing how life in the village was," Nyambe told Context via video call from the Zambian capital Lusaka. Understanding Grief Therapy: A Deep Dive with Andrea Santiago | The Vibe With Ky Podcast October 8, 2023 Nyambe, 30, started a crowdfunding appeal in 2020 with the aim of building a school for the children of Mapapa - located 280 km (175 miles) north of Lusaka. A book titled " Under a Zambian Tree" documenting her journey was released on Feb. 7, with proceeds of the first 5,000 copies going towards her charity.

As a teacher, as a human being, I felt I had to do something to bring education to these children," said Nyambe.

“Under A Zambian Tree” – The Story of Dora Moono Nyambe (ft

Join me as I interview the author of Under a Zambian Tree, Joseph Schmitt. Watch as he chronicles Dora’s quest to educate her nation. When Zambian teacher Dora Moono Nyambe started posting videos on TikTok three years ago, she had to ask her daughter's 13-year-old friend how to use the popular social media platform. Today I connected with the SHOFCO team in Kibera, a settlement within Nairobi. SHOFCO is working to bring clean drinking water to the +1 million people living in informal settlements. They accomplish this by utilizing overhead water pipes and innovative water stations with cashless access. As the Non-Sewered Sanitation Conference comes to a close, Jorge Alvarez and I were left with this message: the status quo is unacceptable!

The book tour is officially over! We'd like to extend our most heartfelt thanks to everyone who came out to see us! We loved meeting each and every one of you and appreciate all of the support. In three years, she has founded a charity called " Footprints of Hope" and built a school which has 350 children and 24 teachers. It has 12 classrooms, a kitchen, dining hall, dormitories and a science laboratory. Our goal is to sell 5,000 copies, of which 100% of the proceeds go directly to Footprints of Hope. This book not only shares an incredible true story, but inspires us to drive grassroots change in our own communities. We are so proud of our amazing team that has helped spread awareness and maximize our impact with this book.

I was alone with my thoughts and dreams. It took everything I had to take that first step, saying to myself 'I will let go of everything else and chase this one dream' The trolling used to bother me a ton. But with everything comes growth ... I know I am not using the children and if people came to Mapapa, they would see it too." Another impending challenge is a possible ban of Chinese-owned TikTok in the United States, from where she gets most of her followers and donations. While some critics have accused her of so-called "charity porn" - meaning using media that exploits the lives of vulnerable people to generate donations or publicity - Nyambe said she should be judged by the impact of her work.Dora is the founder of our NGO, Footprints of Hope Mapapa. At just 27, Dora took her meager savings, moved to a remote village, built a mud house, and began teaching rural children underneath a tree. Three years later, she has saved over 200 children from abuse, forced marriage, rape, and neglect. Dora’s work as an advocate has garnered global attention, from the United Nations, UNICEF, and four million others on social media. Joseph Schmitt, an American researcher is the author of the book and shadowed Dora for a year to help tell her story. Trust Conference is the Thomson Reuters Foundation’s flagship annual event, taking place in the heart of London each year. Find out more.
