Mobile monitors need to be light, and this AOC model fits the bill. The I1601FWUX has a good match of screen size (15.6 inches) and native resolution (1080p), while tipping the scales at less than two pounds. And provided your laptop has a USB-C port that supports DisplayPort over USB, you'll appreciate this panel's one-cable convenience. (Otherwise, look for a model with HDMI input.) Motion performance is fine for casual gaming. Ghosting is kept to a minimum and scenes are reasonably clear during fast camera pans or when scrolling across a map. Small details, like character names or floating hitpoint bars, seem blurry and obscured. This is typical for any 60Hz IPS monitor. With a response time of 5ms, things are generally as smooth as you’d need them to be and video is easy on the eyes.

Contrast ratio is 565:1, which isn’t ideal. Generally, a decent level of contrast for an IPS monitor is anything close to 1000:1 or higher, so this is way off the mark. This is particularly noticeable when watching videos where there’s plenty of dark areas or high levels of contrast – live music videos being a good example. As we said above, you can get around this somewhat by upping contrast and overdrive, but it still isn’t perfect.
The AOC monitor doesn't require any additional software. The company covers the portable monitor with its standard warranty, which offers three years of coverage but only one year for the LED panel. Although supporting USB Type-C is great, it would have been even better if it could have also supported USB Type-A to USB Type-C. This monitor did not work when trying to hook it up using an adapter or even just a Type-A to Type-C cable. A couple years from now this might not be such a huge issue but Type-A is still a lot more common currently, so the option would have been nice. Using our colorimeter, we tested the I1601FWUX at its default brightness level of 70/100. Colour temperature was around 6931K, so a little over the 6500K ideal. At no point did the I1601FWUX look particularly cool, though.

Gaming isn’t a priority for the AOC I1601FWUX. It offers a standard 60Hz refresh rate and doesn’t support adaptive sync. Still, it works well enough in a pinch. The firm also includes software for your PC (e-Saver) that will allow you to control the power management and a desktop screen splitting tool. The additional software can be found on the physical disc that is included in the box. The disc also has the user guide and monitor driver. Conclusion Although the stand is no substitute for the kind you'd get with a non-portable desktop monitor, it's decent compared with some similar mobile-monitor stands I have encountered. Above all, it is sturdy—it didn't collapse once, unlike some other portable-monitor stands I've tried.Sometimes a resolution issue will result in no signal for your AOC monitor. If your PC’s graphics card is set to display a resolution that your monitor cannot, you may get an “AOC monitor no signal” message. Seeing as the I1601FWUX works in sync with Windows 10’s native night mode, low blue mode feels a little redundant, as does overdrive mode — you’re not going to be doing any gaming on this, although you might want to watch the odd YouTube video. This issue is most common when you have been adjusting your display settings. Thankfully, you can reset them pretty easily. Usually the monitor will reset in a few seconds, but if it doesn’t, you can restart your computer and see if that helps. All in all, I'd rate this monitor as good for business documents and web surfing, and passable (though not ideal) for casual photo viewing and light video watching.

The 15.6-inch screen of the I1601FWUX is an IPS (in-plane switching) type, and as you’d expect from a monitor using this technology, viewing angles — on paper, 160 degrees at both orientations — are great. There was only mild greying and discolouration at extreme angles, which is fine. If you really wanted to work with the I1601FWUX at 90 degrees to your laptop, you could… Despite it not being plug and play on the Windows 10 units I tried, the I1601FWUX worked instantly when plugged into a Mac. It didn't require any drivers and it just powered up and started showing an image in less than five seconds. It felt kind of weird having a secondary display, but using it for a few days, it made sense. It hasn't been a necessary part of my arsenal, but having a press release on one screen and the writing area on another or similar setup, proved very useful.AOC’s I1601FWUX is very much a plug and play device. It’s light, weighing just 0.82kg, and measures 235.2 x 376.1 x 8.3mm, so you can sling it in your laptop bag without it taking up too much room or adding much weight. For your money, you get the 15.6-inch monitor, the screen cover/stand and a USB-C to USB-C cable (with USB-A converter), which handles both power and data. There’s also a CD containing the relevant drivers, although these should install automatically anyway. Overdrive is set to ‘off’ as standard, and for much of the time you’ll probably want to leave it that way. Ghosting – that unsightly blur caused by fast-moving objects on digital displays – was very noticeable on this video , but we found that bumping up the I1601FWUX to its medium overdrive setting mitigated this.

The monitor's port and interface selection is perfect in its minimalism, with just a single USB Type-C port and a single button for power. In normal operation, it gives you everything you need to get up and running, and not a single thing you don't. In terms of external controls, there’s the power button… and that’s it. If you want to tweak any of the settings, you’ll need to use the on-screen controls.If you have worked through the other fixes and you are still getting a no signal message, then you need to try something a little more on the hardware side of things. You may need to try to connect your PC to a different monitor or your monitor to a different PC to see if the issues continue or if it is the combination of the two. The AOC I1601FWUX is a pretty solid performer when it comes to being a portable display. It is slim and light enough to carry around with a laptop and doesn't require an external power source. It doesn't produce the best image but it can work to get the job down for most tasks. Downsides include its low contrast and colour gamut, and hard-to-reach settings – but for that price, you can’t expect miracles.
