Sereny, Gitta (6 February 1994). "Re-examining the evidence". The Independent. London. Archived from the original on 1 April 2010 . Retrieved 10 March 2010. In November 2011, it was reported that officials had decided that Venables would stay in prison for the foreseeable future, as he would be likely to reveal his true identity if released. A Ministry of Justice spokesman declined to comment on the reports. [123] On 4 July 2013, it was reported that the Parole Board for England and Wales had approved the release of Venables. [124] [125] On 3 September 2013, it was reported that Venables had been released from prison. [126] 2017 imprisonment [ edit ] Ralph speaks with searing honesty in this book along with his brother Jimmy who had to identify James's body. How awful that must be for somebody to have to do. Thompson and Venables didn't just kill somebody, they destroyed so many lives. Ralph, Denise, their family, and also the people that saw James with Thompson and Venables but did nothing about it. And why would they have done? Ralph himself assumed that James was safe when he saw him on the CCTV with two older boys. Nobody could have guessed what was to happen.

A powerful, heartfelt and moving account of his son's murder and his fight for justice by Ralph Bulger This is a very honest & powerful account of one man's struggle to get justice for his son, never giving up as the legal system seemed more concerned about the welfare of James' unrepentant & psychopathic murderers, than in finding real justice for James. In September 1999, Bulger's parents appealed to the European Court of Human Rights but failed to persuade the court that a victim of a crime has the right to be involved in determining the sentence of the perpetrator. [9] [61] The European Court case led to the new Lord Chief Justice, Lord Woolf, reviewing the minimum sentence. In October 2000, he recommended the tariff be reduced from ten to eight years, [9] adding that Her Majesty's Young Offender Institution was a "corrosive atmosphere" for the juveniles. [62]

This book is absolutely heartwrenching and you'll feel like a different person after reading it. The detail is heartbreakingly honest and the injustice so despicable that if you have any illusions of fairness in the justice system, you won't after this. Foster, Jonathan (2 December 1993). In 1999, lawyers for Thompson and Venables appealed to the European Court of Human Rights that the boys' trial had not been impartial, since they were too young to follow proceedings and understand an adult court. The court dismissed their claim that the trial was inhuman and degrading treatment but upheld their claim they were denied a fair trial by the nature of the court proceedings. [57] [58] [59] The court also held that the Home Secretary's intervention had led to a "highly charged atmosphere", which resulted in an unfair judgment. [60] On 15 March 1999, the court in Strasbourg ruled by 14 votes to five that there had been a violation of Article 6 of the European Convention on Human Rights regarding the fairness of the trial of Thompson and Venables, stating: "The public trial process in an adult court must be regarded in the case of an 11-year-old child as a severely intimidating procedure." It is so hard to rate books based on facts, especially when those facts are based around an appalling death. In this case, the tragic little James Bulger who must have had a terrifying last few hours of his brief life. This book is not an easy read. The chapters surrounding the disappearance and subsequent discovery of James were especially hard to read and at times I had to put the book down because I was actually crying, it is a horrific story and it is impossible to imagine how Ralph, Denise and their family and friends felt at that time. Reading about the moment when Ralph found out his son was dead was just awful. It is incomprehensible how two children could do this to another child. I would reccommend not reading this book before bed as I struggled to sleep with all the thoughts and images in my mind. I know people have theories that perhaps it was their upbringing that made them kill, or the fact that they watched films such as Child's Play 3 but I firmly believe that Thompson and Venables were born evil. There are many people with bad upbringings who go on to live fantastic lives, and there are people from loving homes who go on to become evil people. These two vile individuals were born evil. Reading about what they did was just horrific. Bulger killers' trial ruled unfair". BBC News. Archived from the original on 29 April 2010 . Retrieved 15 April 2023.
