When we ran our battery test (continuous web surfing over Wi-Fi), the 3180 lasted 8 hours and 55 minutes. That's better than the 8:10 average and the Chromebook C202's runtime of 8:23. However, the N22 Touch Chromebook and the N7 Chromebook lasted much longer, at 10:26 and 10:38, respectively. Google doesn’t say when these pre-2019 Chromebooks will get Android apps, only that support is “planned” for some time in the future. Don’t stake your life on it, in other words. At 11.9 x 8.1 x 0.8 inches and 2.8 pounds, the Chromebook 3180 is just slightly thinner and wider than some other student Chromebooks, such as the Asus Chromebook C202 (11.5 x 7.9 x 0.9 inches, 2.6 pounds) and the Acer Chromebook 11 N7 C731T (11.7 x 8.3 x 0.9 inches, 2.8 pounds). It is very close in size to the Lenovo N22 Touch Chromebook (11.8 x 8.4 x 0.9 inches, 2.6 pounds).

The Chromebook 11 is also available in a 2-in-1 convertible version, which lets you rotate the screen 360 degrees to use it as a tablet. However, if you think your kids will primarily be using their Chromebook as a tablet, you may want to go with the detachable Lenovo Chromebook Duet instead.

While it's bright enough for most uses, we definitely wouldn't use the Chromebook 3180's screen outdoors or near a window on a sunny day. The display had a brightness of just 210 nits, compared to 235 nits for the Chromebook N7, 250 nits for the Chromebook C202 and 254 nits for the N22 Touch Chromebook. All of these results are well below the category average of 303.5. Confirm that you completed all instructions exactly as specified in the Create a recovery USB flash drive or SD card section. We recommend creating the recovery media with the latest version of Chrome OS. Avoid using recovery media that may contain an older version of the operating system. The touch screen was very responsive. When in tent or tablet mode, tapping on a text box brings up an on-screen keyboard, which was awkward to type on but got the job done for short inputs. However, it's not the sort of thing a student would want to use for any length of time. The sound from the dual speakers situated on the bottom of the device is loud enough for normal usage, although it’s on the tinny side. Bass is not a feature you’ll associate with the Chromebook 11 3180 and you won’t be filling the room with wall-to-wall sound. One of the more important features of a Chromebook — or any laptop — is its battery life. Dell claims the Chromebook 11 3180 should get up to 10 hours on a single charge and we definitely hit that mark a few times during testing. As we’ve mentioned in the past, battery life does depend on what you’re doing and depending on our activities (a combination of using Google apps, watching videos, and streaming music) we averaged between 7 1/2 and just over 10 hours during testing. Price/Value Unfortunately the 720p camera takes dark, grainy photos without much detail. I would not recommend the camera for video conferencing. But there are some fun filters to play with that can put different color overlays on your image or distort your face, which students might find fun.
Wireless connections are critically important to a Chromebook, since Chrome OS is designed to work with always-on internet connectivity. Unfortunately, this is one area where the Chromebook 3100 suffers a bit. Its dual-band 802.11ac Wi-Fi failed to reliably connect to the internet in my testing at home unless it was in the same room as the router, while my other devices saw a strong connection a few rooms further away. Substandard Wi-Fi components are a hazard of any cheap laptop, but they're especially worrisome on a Chromebook whose raison d'être is constant web connectivity. The Chromebook 11 is comparable with the Acer Chromebook Spin 311 and Samsung Chromebook 4, both of which are similarly priced systems with the same screen size. The Dell is significantly faster than the Lenovo Chromebook Duet, which is a detachable tablet with an ARM rather than x86 processor, but much slower than the more expensive Pixelbook Go, which boasts an Intel Core CPU.
