About this deal

There’s not much you won’t find. There are no app gaps from any of the top tier services, with Dolby Vision and 4K support on Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video and Apple TV. Better still, you’ll even get to use the pay-as-you-go Sky Store – not an app you’ll find on many smart TVs or media streamers – which plays host to a number of exclusive HBO shows as well as Sky’s own programming. This has a massively positive impact on the 3D experience, allowing you to watch 3D for longer without feeling tired, and finally making it possible to see without distraction just how detailed and crisp Samsung’s 3D engine can make full HD 3D material (from Blu-ray) look. Furthermore, the huge reduction in crosstalk also makes the 55D8000’s images seem to have a greater depth, without your eyes having to work overtime to resolve everything. The TVs sensor will detect the brightness of a room and adjust the picture accordingly, so it looks more like a picture than a TV that’s just been left on, which in turn saves power. You can set a timer too, to ensure it switches off after a period of time. Familiar from other Samsungs, we’re offered two Game mode options. If you opt to select Game Motion Plus, you’ll retain some elements of beneficial picture processing. In this mode, input lag measures around 26.7ms (which is fine for casual gaming). However if you disable Game Motion Plus, and go hardcore Game mode, input lag drops to a mere 11.7ms (measured at 1080p/60fps), which can be considered excellent. The result isn’t as precise or dynamic as HDR can be at its very best, but you won’t find many TVs at this level doing much better. Just be aware that, as is the case with all Samsung TVs, there’s no Dolby Vision support here, just HDR10 and the lesser-spotted HDR10+, plus HLG for broadcast.

In terms of usability, the Tizen platform is fast and intuitive. Attractions include Multiview, which enables you to co-display your smartphone screen, Ambient Mode, should you want to keep the set busy when not watching programmes by displaying artwork, and Samsung SmartThings smart home control compatibility. Your connected smart devices appear on the set’s dashboard. It’s also compatible with voice assistants, be they Alexa or Google Assistant. Samsung TU8500 review: Verdict TheSamsung TU8000 TV is available in the UK, US and Australia, with the only difference being the 85-inch variant available in the US – instead of 82-inch in the UK and Australia. Other than that, the line up is the same across all territories, including 43-inch, 50-inch, 55-inch, 65-inch and 75-inch models. Motion is handled smoothly and cleanly, without the need for intrusive amounts of video processing, and 2D sources are upscaled with a keen eye for detail and an even keener talent for subduing source noise. Really, the only significant picture issue, aside from the residual 3D crosstalk, is the set’s fairly limited viewing angle before contrast and colour are reduced. But this is also the case, of course, with pretty much every other LCD TV around except for Panasonic’s IPS Alpha models. Inputs: 3xHDMI 2.1, 2xUSB, 1xRF, CI slot, ethernet Outputs: 1x optical Samsung TU8000 TV review: design The TU8500 panel sits on a splayed central tripod, which makes it easy to park in your living room. The set’s not as chic as Panasonic’s HX800, but the bezel is still fashionably minimal, basically a wraparound frame with an extended lip at the base. Stereo speakers point down from the bottom of the cabinet.

We’d recommend toning the Contrast and Brightness down a little. They’re set to maximum out of the box, which is too strong but understandable given that there’s not a huge amount of peak brightness to this panel.

Last year, it’s fair to say that out of all the major manufacturers’ 3DTV efforts, we were most critical of Samsung’s. While none of the LCD-based 3D TVs really enthused us when it came to 3D (due to annoying crosstalk artefacts), Samsung’s offerings had two other issues that rival LCD TV makers managed to avoid. First, the tri-dimensional modes of the company’s 2010 3D-capable displays were obviously 60hz-centric, because any European-style 50hz video input to the TV showed obvious judder in its 3D display mode. Secondly, Samsung’s 2010 3D LCDs and Plasmas featured poor quality scaling with 3D signals. Scaling in 3D is required for any content that doesn’t deliver Full HD 1080p to each eye, meaning that 720p 3D and Side-by-Side 3D sources were affected. These two issues meant that it was difficult to recommend lastThe UE55D8000 3D LED TV is engineered with Samsungs latest groundbreaking technology to deliver the ultimate home viewing experience. The Ultra Clear Panel and micro dimming technology help reduce reflection and dramatically increase picture contrast, whilst the Wide colour enhancer + feature produces incredibly lifelike colours that are both vivid and natural. The UE55D8000′s 800Hz Clear Motion Rate processor guarantees you get the smoothest and clearest images possible – making it ideal for the sport enthusiasts. Experience explosive Full HD 3D imagery that literally jumps out from the screen and moves you in more ways than one. Add a new depth of realism to your 2D programmes and watch them in glorious 3D with UE55D8000′s advanced 2D to 3D conversion technology. In this new artefact-free configuration, we were much, much happier with the pictures the UE55D8000 was putting out, and began to appreciate this HDTV in a new light. Since we lost access to the 10-point correction mode, darker areas of the picture appeared very mildly blue-tinted, but the inaccuracies were still small and easy to ignore. Colour performance was excellent, with an off-hue blue being the only point of contention in this area. Console Gaming The other two palpable hits about the 55D8000’s 3D performance are the richness of colours and the striking brightness level that remain even after you’ve donned Samsung’s active shutter glasses – glasses which, incidentally, have shifted to Bluetooth syncing with the TV rather than the old infra-red system.

We’re used to having four HDMIs to choose from, even at this price, but the TU8000 only has three. That means even a fairly humble setup of a set-top box, Blu-ray player and games console will use up those parts from the off, with one lost if the set is wall-mounted. There’s no doubt that the picture comes with some limitations at its price, but overall the TU8000 impresses with its natural colour handling, crisp, detailed picture, solid motion processing and good upscaling. It needs some settings tweaked to perform to the very best of its abilities, though.

Apart from Brightness, Contrast, Sharpness and Color, there aren’t many settings to worry about on this TV, however a couple of them are particularly significant. The two most significant settings, though, are the Contrast Enhancer and Samsung’s Shadow Detail, the latter of which is new for 2020. Between these two, you can get an idea of just where the mid-range compromises lie in this reasonably priced TV.
