About this deal

The sexual labor of Black women in pornography, according to historian Mireille Miller-Young, is part of their long struggle to occupy their bodies. This form of voyeurism frames itself as a type of gaze that does not look and enjoys its object of focus while simultaneously othering that object. Yet, brown sugar long served as a source of profit for Western capitalist economies and nation-states. For example, a lot of straight girls are into lesbian porn, and many lesbians love to watch guy-on-guy action.

Miller-Young describes illicit eroticism as a framework to understand how Black women put hypersexuality to work in an effort to confront the taboo and history of Black women’s sexuality. A (slight) relaxation of censorship at the turn of the 1970s triggered a decade where the softcore sex comedy was one of the few surefire commercial bets for British cinema. A bus crash in a small town brings a lawyer to defend the families, but he discovers everything isn't what it seems. The abstract depictions of smiley faces, splayed legs and gaping holes appeal to a childlike sensibility of what's raunchy, somewhat removed from actual human anatomy. But when Juan, Lucia's husband, and Ofelia meet, they feel like a disruptive fantasy have enchanted their minds and bodies. It reflects the fetishization of Black women that characterizes them as the embodiment of hypersexuality. Ariane Cruz is the author of “ The Color of Kink: Black Women, BDSM, and Pornography“, which was published by NYU Press in 2016. And whereas just a few years ago, Ebony videos reinforced stereotypes about black women as being “ratchet” twerking machines, more porn production companies are featuring greater body diversity for black women, which isn’t exactly groundbreaking but it is a step in a more positive direction.

Ewan McGregor is the translator who turns out to be ideally equipped (in every sense) to fulfil Nagiko’s desires. It exists everywhere, from the human body to an unattainable aesthetic to a transcendent plane, an almost otherworldly state. For Miller-Young, agency is a dialectical fact of complex personhood within larger relations of subordination that vary across historical and temporal contexts. A woman is hired as a handmaiden to a Japanese heiress, but secretly she is involved in a plot to defraud her. Like sugar that has dissolved without a trace, but has nonetheless sweetened a cup of tea, black women’s labor and the mechanisms that manage and produce it are invisible but nonetheless there. Until we see greater racial diversity in mainstream media, it’s likely that porn will continue to be an outlet for people who desire black women, which is cool for the porn industry but kind of sucks for women who are just trying to date while black.

When I speak of my duty to cultivate voluptuousness, I never mean any sexual desires toward other human beings (females) least of all sexual intercourse, but that I have to imagine myself as a man and a woman in one person having sex with myself, or somehow have to achieve with myself a certain sexual excitement. Her performance attempts to reterritorialize the always already exploitable black female body as a potential site of self- governing desire, subjectivity, dependence and relation with others, and erotic pleasure.

As Rhodes explains: "The stuttering, intemperate invocations of biblical texts and the threatening curses suggest impotency and emasculation, rather than power. The commodification of sexuality allows Black working-class women to negotiate the existing political economy using their corporeal resources. After getting into a serious car accident, a TV director discovers an underground sub-culture of scarred, omnisexual car-crash victims who use car accidents and the raw sexual energy they produce to try to rejuvenate his sex life with his wife.of or pertaining to passionate love; arousing or designed to arouse feelings of sexual desire; amorous; amatory. Some Ebony viewers are black women, more or less for the same reason: because they want to see themselves represented. But there was also a powerful sensuality emanating from Glenda Jackson’s Oscar-winning performance as the wayward Gudrun. Angela an illegal immigrant living in Los Angeles stumbles across Bill, a disgraced banker on the run.
