About this deal

David and Tucky are torn on what to do about this discovery, but decide to keep the knowledge of the two Germans camping out on the moor to themselves and help them, providing food, blankets and medicine for them in secret. The theme of the story offers the opportunity for cross-curricular work in history when studying WW2, especially evacuees. Whilst out looking for the crashed plane, the boys get in to trouble and David nearly drowns but is saved by the pilot of the plane, who turns out to be a German. He travels all over the UK and abroad talking to people of all ages at literary festivals, telling his stories and encouraging them to tell theirs. Towards the end of WWII enemy prisoners of War were brought to our village to help bring in the harvest.

Friend or Foe - Michael Morpurgo

To touch the lives of children, to witness their listening and reading silence, is reward enough in itself. David Carey and his friend Tucky, two boys from London, are evacuated to a peaceful location in the Devon countryside. Friend or Foe is a gripping World War II book from the author of War Horse and former Children’s Laureate Michael Morpurgo. It’s miles ahead of An Ocean of Minutes in terms of being compulsively readable, for one thing, and for another thing, it’s quite well written. Morpurgo added: “Storymakers and storytellers like Barrie, and like all the previous winners of this award, have given us the hope and faith children need, we need, to keep flying, have sustained us through dark and troubled times, have banished doubt.

His latest book is Boy Giant published by Harper Collins Children’s Books and Owl or Pussycat illustrated by Polly Dunbar and published by David Fickling Books. It offers the argument that being a German soldier during the Second World War (any war, in fact) does make you an evil person. This book is about David and Tucky they see a German bomber plan and they help the Germans but the German gives up when trying to escape from the countryside and the Yeo boys are from London but had to be evacuated because of the war one German wanted to give him self up one wanted to escape but got caught by a milkman . The story takes place over eight chapters and is easily manageable for more competent KS2 readers due to the simpler sentence structures and choice of vocabulary, although the use of topic-specific vocabulary provides good learning and discussion opportunities. Still, I can breathlessly exude that Foe is one of the very best Canadian books I have read in a long, long, long time.

Friend or Foe may not be a Childs choice of book to read, however once reading the children will love it and be eager to read on. Doesn't matter from which country you are, what skin color you have or, like here: if you're on different sides of a war. Many different aspects of life during the war are touched upon and could be used as a study point, e. Still, there are comparisons between Foe and VanderMeer’s Borne: the feuding couple, the surrogate baby (in Reid’s case, of the replacement), a somewhat post-apocalyptic landscape. The only difference here is that Morpurgo used boys instead of horses and was not so dire in the sense that nobody we knew died during the events of the book. Parents were killed during the war however life had to go on as usual and school didn't stop just because of this. Sir Michael Andrew Morpurgo, OBE, FRSL is the author of many books for children, five of which have been made into films. You might think that a novel of this sort might be boring, but Reid gives us a glimpse of domestic homelife that is sweet and sentimental — giving us something for the characters to work towards restoring, and something for the reader to pin his or her hopes on.
