Steer, a small, wiry, ginger-haired South African, was the son of a well-respected Cape newspaperman, Bernard Steer.

As she explains in her 2018 book, Italian Colonialism and Resistances to Empire, 1930–1970, Steer actually mentored the famous suffragette Sylvia Pankhurst and her long-time partner, Sylvio Corio, in the granular details of the Ethiopian war. History and fiction merge seamlessly in this beautiful novel about the resilience of family, love, and tradition in the face of hardship. We are fighting for the independence of our country and for the right of the Spanish people to determine their own destiny.

Steer was one of four foreign journalists in the area and was partially responsible for spreading news of the attack contrary to Franco, who at first denied that the attack had occurred. Undaunted, Steer left Spain for Paris after writing a passionate piece about Bilbao’s heroic last stand against Franco’s troops. In 1992, the painting was moved from the Museo del Prado to a purpose-built gallery at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, both in Madrid, along with about two dozen preparatory works.
