About this deal

I can’t tell you what’s so bad about using Lobster, but I’m going to take a shot at explaining why you might want to try a mechanical keyboard and feel a greater physical connection to the primary tool of your trade. I wonder if that's an anomaly in the particular keybed tested, or is reproducible across instruments? Maybe that's why the high end Yamahas (esp the P-515) have such high upweights, to balance the mass of the solid wood keys. Sadly, there’s no tenkeyless (without a numberpad) version, so make sure you have the desk space to accommodate the Razer if it takes your fancy.

How to choose the right key weight for your keyboard

Using these models too often means compromising on the keyboard size, touchpad or layout, but not so with Microsoft’s effort. The experienced difference between overcoming inertial forces and playing something with fixed resistance exerted by springs is so dramatic that I'm always amazed there's any kind of market for the latter outside extremely lightweight synth actions. Not only do you get a wireless keyboard that sits on your lap, you also have a built-in touchpad for pointer control. In terms of tactile switches, the Kailh Speed Copper feels like they have a little more resistance than a standard Kailh Brown. One of the biggest draws of a mechanical keyboard is that you can easily swap out the keycaps for a different set. Any developer wouldn’t be surprised to see delete and the arrow keys featuring heavily in my usage though — although Vim purists would berate me for not using h,j,k and l more! However, if you do go for switches with an MX mounting stem, then you give yourself the greatest number of options when it comes to keycaps. I wonder if inertia really is a problem -- if it was, then why add lead weights to keys, as Steinway does? The Ergodox EZ is also entirely programmable meaning you can adjust any key to do whatever you like.

Looking for items to leave on a key overnight or while AFK in games (Minecraft for example) to repeatedly make an action occur.

Starting with about 20 grams, place the weights on the standard measurement position and release the key. There’s even a specific MacOS version (pictured) but that tends to be more expensive; we prefer the universal model. From a design standpoint, it seems clear that the design of Kawai's wooden key actions makes a lot of sense if you can accept the weight penalty. Alternatively, measure downweight by slowly depressing the key, and upweight by slowly releasing it with a tension gauge, as shown in Figure 461. This is easy to remove with a small flat blade screwdriver and the keys look brand new with no sign the weights ever existed.

The Definitive Digital Piano Keyboard Touch Experiment

Needless to say, you also have to choose between wired and wireless keyboards, and between wireless keyboards that use Bluetooth and those that work with a bundled USB receiver. If I don't get a response, I'm going to just dive in the deep end (I used to repair video projectors for a living, so I kind of have an idea of what I'm in for). You can also get a deeper sound by opting for flexible options like FR4 or other similar plastic-based materials.

Then you multiply the number of coins of each type by their mass in grams to get the total grams in both weights. PBT plastic doesn’t tend to get shiny over time as ABS does but dye-sublimation doesn’t make as many color options possible. The complaint in the PianoForever video is primarily that a keyboard which is designed to be as compact as possible won't be able to place the fulcrum as far back as it would be on a more conventional keyboard.
