About this deal
The absorbing story of the Cretan village of Plaka and the tiny, deserted island of Spinalonga – Greece’s former leprosy colony – is told to us by Maria Petrakis, one of the children in the original version of The Island. It has been such a success that devils are now being removed for reintroduction to disease free areas in Tasmania. The waters around Maria Island include a Marine Nature Reserve and are visited regularly by seals and whales.

Walking, bicycling, swimming, snorkelling, diving, bird watching, wildlife observation and relaxation are the main activities undertaken by visitors. Rich in indigenous and European history, abundant in wildlife, boasting spectacular views and remarkable geological features, the entire island is a National Park, managed by the Tasmanian Parks and Wildlife Service.
A vehicular track extends from Darlington 20 kilometres (12mi) south to Haunted Bay on south Maria Island, with a number of side-tracks and points of interest along the way. Gill Smith’s rich, full-colour illustrations will transport the reader to the timeless and beautiful Greek landscape and Mediterranean seascape.
