About this deal

I also found that I sort of figured out who would die and then who did it reasonably fast – though I didn’t get why as you don’t get the hint til close to the reveal.

Murder on the Safari Star by M. G. Leonard - Pan Macmillan Murder on the Safari Star by M. G. Leonard - Pan Macmillan

It’s a super premise for a series of stand alone adventures, with Hal and train buff uncle travelling the world, and given its light tone, different locations and the challenge of solving the mystery before Hal, it’s a super read for kids. Elisa Paganelli was born in Italy and since childhood, hasn't been able to resist the smell of paper and pencils. But something suspicious is happening on board the Safari Star and when a passenger is found mysteriously killed inside a locked compartment, it’s up to Hal, along with his new friend Winston and his pet Mongoose, Chipo, to solve the murder mystery.Harrison Beck has already solved a kidnapping and caught a jewel thief, so when his Uncle Nat treats him to a trip on the luxurious Safari Star in Africa, he can't help but hope that another mystery will be waiting for him. The main reason we love this series is that it's a mystery on a train - and this one does not disappoint. All-aboard for the third amazing journey in the bestselling Adventures on Trains series, Murder on the Safari Star, from M.

Murder on the Safari Star - Goodreads

Harrison, or Hal, the child detective, and Uncle Nathaniel, a travel journalist who, conveniently, gets great freebie commissions with a plus one on vintage trains in far-flung places, find themselves in South Africa on the Safari Star. Beetle Boy won the Branford Boase award and has been translated into thirty-seven languages worldwide. With a cast of delightfully dubious characters who are all potential suspects, Kidnap on the California Comet will keep readers guessing and reading on to enjoy the developing friendships and follow the red herrings across the USA, to a satisfying conclusion. Harrison Beck and his Uncle Nat are on the journey of a lifetime aboard the Safari Star – a luxurious steam train that will take them from Pretoria in South Africa to the stunning Victoria Falls.Which is forgivable, as I doubt the series would work if Hal and Nat just went for a plain old train ride 😉 Aside from all that, it was great to see Hal work his magic on another mystery. Close encounters with the amazing animals and landscape of Southern Africa are adventure enough, but things get mysterious when a passenger is found dead inside a locked compartment.

Because they are so grounded now in who they are, I'm always excited to see how they interact with a new cast of characters, and who Hal makes friends with next. Instantly, you know that there’s going to be a mystery to solve as a cast of suspicious characters with intriguing backstories unravel, including Luther Ackerman, train owner, and retired detective Erik Lovejoy. As usual, the characters are intriguing, the setting (in and out of train) is marvelous, and the mystery itself is quite clever.Paganelli's illustrations also help immensely - I was particularly fond of a beautiful double page spread detailing the carriages and everybody's location with them. The conversation about rhinos and their endangerment because of their horns is a very real and heartbreaking reality that I think was excellently talked about in this.

Murder on the Safari Star — Adventures On Trains Murder on the Safari Star — Adventures On Trains

The Adventures on Trains series is published in the UK and US by Macmillan, and is licensed to more than ten countries around the world, including the Czech Republic, France, Greece, Italy, Japan, Latin America, the Netherlands, Romania, Russia, Spain and Sweden. Obviously, this is not just a simple train journey, as soon disaster strikes and there is a murder to solve! We also got a teeeeeeeny sneak peek at the next book and I think it will be another corker - I'm liking the set up already. It was also good to see a note from the authors referencing the impact of the British Empire and colonialism upon the continent and the importance of understanding how the railways often came at great human cost to the local populace. Hal, who was outside the room at the time, doesn't believe it was an accident, but he'll have to prove it, if anyone is going to believe him. This time, Hal and his uncle Nat were traveling in Safari Star, a luxurious safari train in South Africa.
