About this deal

I think these are kind of perfect books for teaching kids about being friends…I mean Narwhal’s power is making other people super? Jelly tries to work out his jealousy in story two, and in story three, the new trio say “Ahoy, adventure! NYT-bestselling creator of the Dog Man and Captain Underpants series, Dav Pilkey Narwhal is a happy-go-lucky narwhal. Start by cutting a piece from the bottom of your paper plate to make the main part of Jelly’s body and then paint this plate blue.

Jelly isn’t dressing up, though — he’s a little scared of this time of year, and would prefer to hunker down in a hidey-hole until Halloween is over. This paperback edition features a brand-new, never-before-seen comic by Jelly, starring Super Waffle and Strawberry Sidekick!

The simple text and illustrations are paired with beautifully subdued colors that allow the reader to focus on the (surprisingly) expressive characters as they react to each other and their environment. An exciting first volume in an attractive series of graphic novels for junior readers, this tale successfully combines science fiction, humour, family difficulties and environmental concerns in an accessible and entertaining format.

Full disclosure: I received a free copy of this book for review through Library Thing's Earlier Reviewers program. Ben Clanton is an author and illustrator whose books include It Came in the Mail, Something Extraordinary, Rex Wrecks It!Narwhal is a happy-go-lucky sea creature, whose amazing horn-like tooth on his forehead earns him the nickname "unicorn of the sea". Make sure that you bookmark this page or pin an image so that you can find it again later – you can make the crafts with your kids when they’ve read the books too! In the first story, Otty the otter makes her debut splash; while Narwhal greets her with immediate enthusiasm, Jelly’s not so sure about her…mostly because he worries she’ll take his place as Narwhal’s best friend. In the hilarious ninth book of this blockbuster graphic novel series, Narwhal’s sweet tooth leads to some very funny feelings!

The witty comic-strip illustrations are simple, yet full of character, and are rendered using a predominantly blue and yellow palette, with occasional splashes of colour. I was super disappointed the formatting was off on my kindle for this little cutie but I still enjoyed the illustrations and the adorable story. And finally, Narwhal and Jelly read the best book ever – even though it doesn’t have any words…or pictures! Sometimes children just need something that they can find amusing, something to give them the giggles and put a smile on their faces and I believe these books will do just that.Narwhal and Jelly are the best of friends - but when Jelly persuades Narwhal to try peanut butter for the first time ever, it's a life-changing event for Narwhal as he becomes obsessed with the fabulous new flavour sensation! This means the tv or movie must be paused so the can explain the plot points I literally didn’t see. He tries to be super strong, and even tries to fly (under the sea), but he doesn't have those super powers either. I'm not sure that the leveled reader audience needs yet another series about a pair of friends, but nonetheless they're lucky to have this one, and so is my inner child. Narwhal loves Halloween — it’s a great excuse to dress up in a spooky and silly costume, like a ghost, a mermaid, a banana or maybe even Marlow the Mustachioed Moose.

A sequel to Narwhal: Unicorn of the Sea this picture book follows the 2 best friends as they work to become superheroes. Narwhal and Jelly spread some holiday cheer (and warm waffle pudding) in the festive fifth book of this blockbuster graphic novel series! In the first story, Narwhal reveals his superhero alter-ego and enlists Jelly to help him figure out what his superpower is.These books are perfect for kids – I know this because when I went to photograph them my two had hidden them in their ‘special place for books they don’t want touching’ and they’ve spent the weekend giggling along to Narwhal and Jelly’s adventures in the ocean complete with jokes, facts and a lot about waffles! In the hilarious eighth book of this blockbuster graphic novel series, Narwhal and Jelly celebrate the spookiest time of the year — Halloween — with a super twist! The books are about two friends that love adventures, parties and waffles (especially waffles) and they’re perfect for kids aged five and over who are progressing from picture books as they’re created as early graphic novels with loads of pictures.
