Description

In this feminist reworking of a classic fairy-tale theme, Princess Smartypants defies her parents' wishes, outwits her suitors, and remains a content and single young lady. Their enduring success led to the more recent addition of Long Live Princess Smartypants (2004), Princess Smartypants Breaks the Rules (2009) and Princess Smartypants and the Missing Princes (2016). She asks Prince Rushforth to feed her pets, challenges Prince Pelvis to a roller-disco marathon, and invites Prince Vertigo to rescue her from the tower, but they all fail spectacularly. This version of the story is translated in Bengali which is great for EAL children whose first language is Bengali. When the other princes heard what happened to Prince Smartypants, on of them wanted to marry the princess .

All together the book was a fun story and I like how the book was throughout colorful and had lots of details in the drawings. She worked on such children's programmes as Bagpuss (working with Oliver Postgate and Peter Firmin) and Jackanory for BBC television.

I am not a Mrs, and I like the idea of a story about an independent girl who doesn't want to be a Mrs, and is happy to be a Ms. Four complete English units of work designed for Year 1 but easily adaptable for Reception or Year 2. She produced animated storyboards for the BBC and illustrated numerous greetings cards and books by other authors as well as her own.

Princess Smartypants is an example of a children’s picture book which uses gender reversal to tell a story that would never really happen. The book can also be used as a starting point for discussions around gender roles at a level Year 1 students can engage with.I think that this humourous and engaging storybook would be great to use in guided reading, as well as keeping in the book corner for independent reading. Reversals] create empathy and are great detectors of bias, in ourselves as well as in others, for they expose injustices that seem normal and so are invisible.
