This is great and something very unique to Sigma – neither Nikon, nor Canon allow this much customization on their lines of lenses. The ring turns 180 degrees through its focus range, providing excellent tactile resistance for manual focusing operations: it's nicely cammed, and very smooth. In terms of glass construction, the new 120-300mm lens is similar to the old model with 23 elements in 18 groups with a large front element needing a 105mm filter. You can change this behavior with a USB dock and set one of the custom modes on the lens to speed priority, in which case the speed of the lens will greatly increase, but the accuracy will drop.

Lens Review - Sigma 300/2.8 HSM EX

I placed my combo on a tripod and it revealed a pretty good alignment where I didn't seem to need to adjust anything with autofocus fine tune. I have not tried the lens myself but reports indicate that is VERY close to the Canons at the center of the image, the AF is one of Sigmas best and it takes the (Canon) extenders well. While hand holding this lens is not impossible, it's large and heavy, and using a monopod (at least) is highly recommended if you plan on shooting for any length of time. Compared to the previous version, Sigma states that this model is dust and splash-proof, but not fully waterproof – more like "weather-sealed. With its smooth turning tripod collar and focusing ring, easy-to-use filter holder and excellent autofocus performance (with or without teleconverters), the Sigma 300/2.

You can bet that something in a body, mount or similar will change making your investment obsolete in a Sony. photography-lover: Common sense and experience tell a user what can be done with the lenses she/he owns. I noticed this when I was out in the field shooting and was scratching my head wondering how it was that I had never noticed this problem with my Nikon 200-400 f/4G VR. When shooting wildlife or sports where things are happening quickly, I can imagine a situation, where I will miss a shot because I focused in the wrong direction and by the time I corrected, the moment had passed.
