About this deal

After a second helping of Pomare’s brilliant writing thanks to his next release, In the Clearing, I was eager to begin my third experience of this accomplished thriller novelist’s work. He thinks he can fuck Diana (his ex), Nicole (his fling) and Lucy (his girlfriend) without getting caught and he thinks it's perfectly okay. What author Carola Lovering does in the remainder of the novel, is illuminate how such a relationship is formed. It’s something you know and feel from the moment your eyes meet theirs - yet you are like a moth to a flame? Wanting so badly to be the reason for someone to be different or want something different that it consumes you, and in the end the only person that is different is you; and not the different you aspire to be.

However, I think that Lovering is extremely talented and although it took me awhile to get into, her writing made me want to keep reading. And it recounts the toxic relationship between two people who, just like the blurb says, can’t let go even though they know they should. I read this in one day because it was so well-written, engaging, fast-paced and at only roughly 250 pages it didn't take long to get through. When I was in college, I made the rookie mistake of going out with someone who initially gave me "bad vibes.

But we can’t always have what we want and like I mentioned at the beginning, I was still addicted to this story, unable to put it down.

Thanks is extended to Hachette Australia for providing a free copy of this book for review purposes. Readers will be pleased to know that the pink elephant in the room is addressed and that the author doesn’t try to play dumb when it comes to the title.

Tell Me Lies is a book you have to pick up to read in a sitting if possible, this relatively succinct novel really packs a punch! ANYONE who has dated someone like Stephen will understand (though may not like) a lot of things Lucy does. Nasty New Yorkers seems to be the new trend in women's lit this year, as I've seen it displayed not just in TELL ME LIES, but also SOCIAL CREATURE and SOCIABLE. I loved all of the connections and twenty minutes before the end of the book I had determined that I really hated the ending; I finished the book and loved it. The pace never lets up, wrapping the reader in a puzzling tale that looks closely at the construction of lies.

I find OTT endings more tolerable on audio because I get swept up in the drama cultivated by the narrator. Lucy knows better, but can’t help walking into the burning fire of what is their “relationship” over the course of 5 years. That being said, this got old really fast and I felt like the book was way too long for what all happened in it. I went in with pretty low expectations but actually ended up enjoying it just as much as I did BIG LITTLE LIES. I know college life for many young adults includes the same subjects, buThis book was awesome, honestly one of the best audiobooks I’ve listened to and I normally strongly dislike the Audible Originals. I will encourage anyone with a vested interest in complex thrillers and fast paced mystery novels to consider this psychological based tale.

Tell Me Lies is a story about a character who loses herself and finds herself thanks to the manipulative, detached, charming, deplorable guy she meets in college. Even though he tries to ask her out occasionally, she's just not interested in starting anything with someone for whom she doesn't feel anything. He might have had genuine feelings at moments, but his feelings easily changed and he only thought of himself: no guilt, no remorse, no empathy (what a sociopath! Tell Me Lies travels at supersonic speed, issuing the reader with a complex psychological based story, that thrills from the first line to the parting sentence.

With Tell Me Lies, Carola Lovering has given us a keenly observed, no-holds-barred examination of the mistakes we make under the guise of love. Romances usually have happy endings, and even if they don't have happy endings, they usually have a mutual attraction/bond between the pairings, whereas it's made pretty clear that Stephen is not only incapable of reciprocating the feelings that the numerous girls he strings along in this book expect from him, but he gets annoyed when they try to force the issue, too. If you've ever fallen for the wrong person —and let's be honest, you probably have —this book is for you. Her relationship with Stephen consumes her—she's either thinking of him, wondering what he is doing when he's not with her, or making herself sick that she's not with him. But it's kind of a kick to the stomach as well because I related to this story in ways I'm ashamed to admit.
