About this deal

The Tiger Who Came to Tea by Judith Kerr is an impossibly possible story that captures the essence of childhood. But there we were in the Blitz, people being killed every night, and nobody ever said anything nasty to them. This tale of a family who receive a dangerously exciting visitor opens up the imagination and views the world through a child’s eyes. It tells the story of a girl named Sophie and her mum who are about to sit down to tea when the doorbell rings. As a result, many readers have suggested the tiger who comes to tea represents the Nazis, who disrupted the quiet, suburban lifestyle Judith was used to.

Rosen claims the tiger could be based on her memory of the past threat: something that could have disrupted her life as a young child and taken everything the family owned. This gives children the opportunity to retell the main events of the story using our colourful cards – what a great way to develop their comprehension and memory!

With the family reunited in Switzerland, they became refugees with little money and travelled first to Paris. Her mother Julia was a composer and her father, Alfred Kerr, a Jewish intellectual and theatre critic. Earlier this year, Newsnight presenter Emily Maitlis said: "I remember asking Judith Kerr if the tiger symbolised the 1960s sexual revolution where normal mores and suburban life became upended by this wild and exotic creature. Whether or not there are subconscious overtones in The Tiger Who Came to Tea, the book has never been out of print since it was first published. Composer David Arnold said the score he wrote fell into place after he had finished writing the song which appears in the middle of it.We take my youngest daughter to the library every week as she has such an appetite for stories, so I will keep my eye out for this one. As a child who's a huge fan of Walliams, Ross was particularly delighted to meet him during the recording process. Children's author Michael Rosen has previously told the BBC: "Judith knows about dangerous people who come to your house and take people away. Children revel in delight at the idea of such a naughty (and potentially dangerous) guest gorging himself on the entire contents of the house.
