About this deal
Fiskars Splitting Wedge is a must-have tool for anyone who needs to split hardwood for the chimney, stove, barbecue or campfire. The Estwing Sure Split Wedge is a wood splitting wedge designed to make splitting easier and more efficient. The Fiskars Splitting Wedge can only be used with a polymer hammer, providing an efficient and effortless wood splitting experience. It is an excellent tool for anyone who needs to split small pieces of firewood, creating kindling quickly and safely. In a crowded field of lower-cost wedges, this was the one that offered the best performance and durability.
Additionally, the extra-large spherical striking face provides a centred and efficient blow, making each strike count. If you were just to use the wedges to open the expandable corners then uneven tension is probably the main problem it could cause, which can be avoided by doing it gradually, tapping them all in lightly and then going around again a few times.
Its fast taper head allows for easy starting, while the fins permit extra wedge action for a cleaner split. And we particularly enjoyed the spherical striking face that made sure each blow to the log was nice and centered.
The wedges are asymmetrical and they work well in either orientation – if you insert them with the long side or the short side against the side of the stretcher bar. And even if the metal weren’t soft, the design is not thick enough to really make an impact on the logs.
The wide, flat head provides more splitting power, and the notches prevent the log from popping out when being split. Whacking them in forcefully could cause too much tightening of the fabric on one corner and uneven tension could cause that corner to eventually tear. If I do that on the centre of all four bars (I often tap upwards so the weight of the canvas gives something to push against) I usually get an even tightening, then when I tap the wedges in I do it quite lightly, just until they stick.
