About this deal

When a very tall stranger entrusts her with a strange parcel wrapped in newspaper, tied in string, Seren is confused. A very, very long time ago in 2020, Volcano ran a dress rehearsal for a wintry family adventure, The Clockwork Crow, based on a novel by Welsh author Catherine Fisher.

There is so much more to the Tylwyth Teg (Welsh fairies) than first meets the eye and I would love to read more stories about these mysterious creatures. Vor allem ab dem Moment, wenn wir gemeinsam mit unserer Romanheldin Stella in ihrem neuen Zuhause im verschneiten Wales ankommen, habe ich das Ambiente richtig geliebt. He's quite something, a little full of himself, surly, demanding, you know the crotchety type who thinks you're at their whim. Neugierig schaut sie hinein und sieht einen mechanischen Vogel, der in seine Einzelteile zerlegt wurde und einen Zettel mit der dringenden Warnung ihn nicht zusammen zu setzten.I am very curious where the second book is going to take us, but I am sure it will be magical once again. Thank you Catherine Fisher, I have one wish for you, that a successful tv series comes of these books, and brings you the rewards you deserve, for sharing your magic with children. Children of ten and older will find themselves pleasurably lost in this enchanting, candlelit delight.

Seren's fairies are of the darker variety, meant to entrap you with their lulling voice and who's frail snowy like hands grasp at your hair refusing to let you leave. Travelling to a new home with an unknown new family, orphan Seren Rees is shivering in a Victorian station waiting room, when she is given a mysterious newspaper parcel by a strange and frightened man, who then disappears. But when she arrives in Wales, her Godfather and family are not in residence and she’s left with a bunch of dour servants who seem to be hiding something. Her first novel, The Conjuror's Game, was shortlisted for the Smarties Books prize and The Snow-Walker's Son for the W.Some read-alikes are The Wolves of Willoughby Chaseby Joan Aiken, The Night Gardener by Jonathan Auxier, The Incorrigible Children of Ashton Place by Maryrose Wood, and (for older readers) The Perilous Gard by Elizabeth Marie Pope. Catherine Fisher has woven her magic once more, twisting fairy tales, folklore and fantasy into a spellbinding tale. That man in the dark coat had been really scared and desperate to keep this safe, but why was a toy so important? I felt for Seren and the fact that what she wanted for life was so simple yet had been unattainable thus far. Full of deep fairytale resonance, Fisher’s writing stands out in the mind’s eye like blood drops on snow.

These books by Catherine Fisher feel like extended fairy tales full of adventure, friendship and quite often danger. The Clockwork Crow is a gripping Christmas tale of families and belonging set in snowy Wales from a master storyteller. She puts together the bird that was in the parcel one day while bored at the house, thinking it’s a toy. But when she gets there, the happy Christmas she had hoped for turns out to be an illusion--the young son of the house, Tomos, has been missing for almost a year, rumored to have been taken by the fairies. With the help of a new, incredibly unusual friend, Seren decides to investigate and is shocked by what she discovers.Characters not particularly exciting (my favourite, panicked thin man, is there early and late and that's about it).
