About this deal

Syringe feeding is a short-term solution, and as soon as the rabbit is eating by itself, then their normal diet should be gradually reintroduced. Lethargy, tachypnoea, heart murmurs, gallop rhythm, increased lung sounds and peripheral oedema are clinical signs of iatrogenic fluid overload, which is very difficult to reverse.

The large food retailers, including Burgess, Lafeber, Oxbow and Supreme, all have products available suitable for syringe feeding. She helps to socialize the rabbits and educate volunteers on the care and behavior of these small mammals. It’s often even more difficult to administer Critical Care than other oral medications because you need to go slow.It is vital that no more than 1ml of food is given per mouthful and that the rabbit is given time to chew and swallow.

Critical Care is to be used in animals that are not eating voluntarily and are under a veterinarian’s care. The full method of placement is outside the scope of this article, however, complications can include placement in the trachea, epistaxis, damage to the mucosa, tube blockage, reflux, aspiration and nasal discharge ( Brown, 2010). It is not unusual for acute neurological episodes, such as head tilt, to follow a stressful incident. Critical Care can be given to your pet in two different ways: either serve as a wet mash in a small bowl, or use a syringe.

The formulation is a mixture of selected short chain maltodextrins (derived from corn starch) and a protein concentrate supplemented with amino acids. C and maintaining optimum body temperature is very important, although care is required to prevent rabbits becoming too warm.Local anaesthetic is also recommended as this will help during placement ( Paul-Murphy and Pollock, 2011). Assist feedings can be stressful for all involved, so speaking softly and continually reassuring your pet throughout the feeding can help make the experience as positive as possible. Providing any critical care nutrition depends on the disease process and/or the patient's specific requirements. We went to the vets earlier and he hasn't lost any weight but he gave him another jab of gut stimulant just in case.

You should avoid giving your rabbit Critical Care unless directed to do so by a qualified veterinarian. Other things can be added to the mix to make it more palatable such as pure fruit or vegetable puree baby food (i.Handling or unfamiliar surroundings can elevate blood glucose levels that can be as high as 30mmol/l in rabbits with acutely painful conditions such as intestinal obstruction. A full health check should have been conducted before, and any blood work and fluid therapy requirements already calculated and worked out, as this will need to be considered when the feed is being administered and calculated.
