About this deal

She goes through a change and becomes super pretty right before she starts school but it never goes to her head and she stays incredibly grounded throughout the story. Right after they finish their routine Jessica goes next (its funny because she has no flexibility skills or anything like that). And with Hope not being an "on-screen" character in the first two books, I still feel like it's a treat to have her as a character in the books.

In Sloppy Firsts, I always felt like Jessica and Marcus’ relationship up to that point was vague, at best. Jessica Darling (Chloe East) is anxiously awaiting the first day of junior high school in JESSICA DARLING'S IT LIST. On April 23, 2006, The Harvard Crimson reported that several portions of Kaavya Viswanathan's highly publicized debut novel How Opal Mehta Got Kissed, Got Wild, and Got a Life appeared to have been plagiarized from Sloppy Firsts and Second Helpings, noting over a dozen similar passages. While this book didn’t completely wow me like the first book in this series, it was still a solid read and I continue reading the next book in this series. Don't get me wrong, I loved Marcus in this, but I feel like he was just there because what's a Jessica Darling book without Marcus Flutie? With Jessica’s social awkwardness in play, things go awry on all four counts, but not in a particularly harmful way.

The tone is definitely much younger than her other books, and I think even elementary school readers would enjoy it. She's not got as impressive of a vocabulary, though she's starting to build it because she's discovered that her English teacher will really raise her essay grades for each thesaurus phrase substituted for a normal term. Hosting an epic slumber party might even help to make Jessica popular…but is that what she really wants? The writing is simple, the humor is aimed for younger readers, and the characters are not very mature. and can we not forget that this shit doesn't happen in middle school like the hell, we didn't have no such thing as quads and the cheer team is just dumb as hell. While her old BFF, Bridget, is busy talking (nonstop) about her new boyfriend, Burke, Jessica tries to fit in with her new friends, Sara, Manda, and Hope. This is another perfect back-to-school book, especially for those kids making the transition from elementary to middle school.

In Sloppy Firsts, the original Jessica Darling book, Jessica is seriously depressed, but also completely self-aware and precocious. When I got the opportunity to read and review her new prequel middle grade series I jumped at the chance and I am so happy that I did.
