About this deal

The splitting heads have a wedge-shaped head with a 30° grind similar to the chopping axes, but with extended convex cheeks that flare out to split wood apart. The cheek shape allows for penetration before widening to spread the wood apart and creates less friction as the head passes through.

Its size and weight make it easy to handle, especially for splitting smaller logs that can be handled one-handed. I think it’s a great option for the woodpile where it can save you from having to switch between multiple axes (within reason). Or it could be a good option for car camping, where really all you need to do is split firewood. Car camping or RVing with the X11 The head is a 1lb stout wedge shape that makes it decent at both splitting and chopping greenwood up to about 4-5″ wide. It will easily blow through typical kindling size wood and has more potential to be dangerous to less experienced users. The blade could find your other hand or your shins very easily if used incorrectly. Despite the short handle, the wedge-shaped head makes it almost as good at chopping or splitting as the X7. Although you do lose a bit of power, and the leverage a longer handle can provide when splitting. Sometimes it helps to twist wood apart if it doesn’t split on the first strike, and you can’t do that as easily with the X5.Pro výrobu čepele byla použita vysoce kvalitní uhlíková ocel, která se snadno udržuje a brousí. The length is also an ideal distance away for kindling, as it’s easy to keep aim and be precise. While its total length is 14” (13.875 to be precise), the last inch gets taken up by the massive hook on the bottom, so it handles like a 13”. or 17″ axes will (or can) be used with two-handed swings and can put your legs/feet in the danger zone. Inexperienced axe users tend to chop in an arc motion, which can lead to a shorter axe hitting their toes/ankles/shins either off a bounce or just after passing through the wood. The X7 is probably the better for basic car camping – where your wood comes pre-cut and you might just need to pop a few pieces apart for kindling. The X10 is more of a forest axe and chopper that can also be a kindling maker.

The two types of Fiskars axe types are chopping and splitting, and they look almost identical – but they are different. This is a two-handed axe, and you can generate much power to start splitting larger logs, even up to 12 inches in diameter. This axe can flex between one-handed use for kindling and two-handed use splitting larger logs. It can go up to about 8″ wide logs. Wood is stunning, but let's be frank: how many handles did I have to replace in the past? Every year I organize dozens of lumber clinics for people who have no experience when it comes to chopping wood, so axes regularly break due to misuse. The hook at the bottom is smaller than the other models so you can hold that in a half-hand manner and get a little more clearance. But the hollow end of the handle can dig into your palm and isn’t super comfortable for extended use this way. The Fiskars X21 axe is ideal for splitting logs of up to 30 cm and above and is a great all-rounder that can handle most heavy-duty chopping tasks. The head is the same width as the X17 above, which means this axe can be used for more detailed woodwork and smaller chopping tasks.

So if size and weight are the most important factors – then this is a capable little hatchet. But I would go for the X7 if possible. The X11 has a heavier specialized head with flared cheeks that help fling the wood apart when splitting. The 17″ handle allows it to be used one-handed or two, so you can put some real power behind it for larger pieces of wood. There are 8 different shapes and sizes in the Fiskars X-Series Axes range, which includes 3 x chopping axes and 5 x splitting axes, as seen in the image above. Each of the different Fiskars axes will do one job better than the next, which is why you should have a good idea of what you will be using it for before you buy one. Fiskars axes are a great choice, but it can be hard to know which to get because they have so many models. And they don’t do a great job helping people tell them apart. If you need a splitting axe, I suggest you switch to this article: Which Fiskars Splitting Axe is Right For You. It gets more in depth on those models. The axe features a thin yet wide-edged blade that guarantees effortless, precise cuts in fresh, resinous wood types such as spruce or pine. Its exceptional cutting prowess is complemented by a lightweight, sturdy shaft that ensures perfect balance, making it an ideal choice for both general yard work and small construction projects around your home.
