About this deal

Digging soakaways for clay soil drainage. Don’t try this under any circumstances! Digging a soakaway into clay soil will cause the hole to overflow and will lead to a flood! One of the best ways to get rid of water from a low spot is to simply drain it away through an underground drainage pipe. For this to work, you need an area to discharge the water that’s lower than the inlet. The underground drainage pipe should slope downhill at least 1/8 in. per foot. If you had a discharge outlet 100 ft. from the inlet, it would have to be about 1 ft. lower. Drainage pumps are not a solution on their own as they need to be connected to one of the other collection and disposal options. The function of a drainage pump is to move water to a place where gravity cannot get it to.

The next solution is an extension of the first. Simply installing a soakaway area under the problem area can work but if you have a wider issue there may be no way of the water making its way to the soakaway area. Most exterior drains cover an area 10' to 100' long by 6" wide, to a depth that slopes down 16" or deeper. Interior basement French drains are often the same length as the perimeter or slightly larger. Where Does The Water From Drains Go? Performing a similar function to french drains, surface drainage channels catch water running off a surface and divert it to a collection or disposal point. They function much the same as the big rusty metal grids at the side of the road, catching water and redirecting it underground. unless it has been dealt with upstream by installing a drainage system to catch or divert the water, is naturally going to be a problem downstream. It's not really your neighbour's fault that Land Drain Pipe can also be bought in clay sections but the introduction of plastic has made their use, for the domestic application, virtually obsolete. Pipe can also be bought which only has holes half way round. Elevating the whole garden via raised beds or with an additional layer of gravel and topsoil. This MAY work but, since the water won’t be going anywhere, you yet again risk shifting the problem to another area as with the topsoil method above.

The drains have to be at a slight angle to ensure gravity does its job and water flows smoothly; a 1:150 gradient is perfect but no more than 1:100. The lengths of land drain can be cut easily using most conventional saw tools, but must be done in between corrugations, and drains joined together to create a herringbone layout using coil connectors or multi-junctions. This type of drain need only be about 6" wide and 12" deep. Before filling with gravel, line the trench with landscape fabric to keep earth out of the gravel to allow water to percolate To finish, replace surrounding turf so that your new turf blends seamlessly. Remove a little soil and replace with sand to improve drainage of the whole area. Where open ditches are unsuitable, French ditches can be constructed by filling the ditch with coarse gravel topped with permeable membranes or upturned turf to keep soil from entering the gravel. Finally finish with topsoil. Piped drainageA Soakaway must be at least 5 metres from any habitable building, by local authority regulations. The pipe flowing to them should be of at least 75mm diameter which is the minimum pipe size for any surface water drainage. 80mm is the recommended size. As with all home improvement projects, there are a number of factors that can affect the total price you pay for installing a drainage system in your garden. Subsoil and topsoil were mixed together during property construction, creating compacted soil that water has a hard time draining through. Uneven lawn or garden surfaces. On clay and other water retentive soils, the flow of water through the soil is very slow made worse by Often there’s no easy way to shed excess water. In this case, it is sometimes worth replacing the lawn with a new one –strip off the old turf, dig over the area, incorporating plenty of organic matter to improve drainage, then rake and level. Cover with a 5cm (2in) layer of sharp sand, then either sow lawn seedor lay turf on top.

Note that, sometimes, especially after a heavy rain, accumulated surface water may also not drain as fast as usual. This, however, could mean that your soil simply needs to be aerated. Types of garden drainage systems In addition a neighbour next door to us had his garden raised so that it appears since then that the water runs to ours and other neighbours’ gardens all of which are now much lower than his. The answer is to create an easy path for the water in the ground to flow so that the surface water can drain away. There are a number of common methods used to improve drainage, here is a brief overview of them from least effective (but cheapest) to most effective (but most expensive).Start by making a swale-essentially a gentle, shallow drainage ditch. Then line it with gravel or stones and add interest with boulders, a bridge or plantings. It was clear that a water storage solution was not going to work with this volume of water. She decided to get a drainage pump installed which redirected the garden water slightly uphill into the surface water drain at the side of the house. Not only did the drainage pump drain her garden but also sorted the neighbours gardens on both sides! Decide where to put your drain, and then dig your trench. The rule of thumb is that your pipe should have a space equal to its own width on either side, and at least 100mm from its top to the finished level before the turf is replaced. In our case, the trench is about 200mm wide (65mm space + 65mm pipe + 65mm space) and 180mm deep. Use your level to ensure that the trench is falling slightly in the required direction. Managing surface water run-off effectively and efficiently is a great way to improve drainage. All you need to do is incorporate sloping surfaces within your garden so that the excess water is directed to an area where it can be disposed of – for example, a surface drain or plant bed containing moisture-loving plants. Drainpipe discharge: The discharge end of your drainpipe can be connected to pop up yard drain emitter that sits flush to the lawn when no water is flowing.Drainpipe inlet: Position the inlet catch basin at the low spot of your soggy area. The grate will sit flush to the lawn for easy mowing.

Installing a drain, downspout extension piping, or curtain drain takes 1 to 2 days on average. More complex projects with longer lengths of pipe in the yard take up to 2 weeks. Time varies according to the size and difficulty of the project, drain depths, and type of soil. When Is The Best Time To Install A Drainage System? The next stage is to make a series of slit trenches at right angles at the drainage pipes across the lawn with a spade at 400 mm centres, about 75 mm deep and fill them with a washed sand. It is important that the slits connect with washed stone over the main pipes – you should be able to feel the stone with the spade as you form the slit. When you're experiencing drainage problems in your yard, call a landscaper, plumber, or waterproofing company that's experienced with drains. Professionals will custom-design the best drainage solution for your water-management issues. Does Homeowners Insurance cover drainage systems? You don't need an in-depth technical construction drawing but making a plan of what, where and how will make a handy guide throughout installation. Typically, land drainage is arranged in a herringbone style with one central pipe and several branches coming out of this; this ensures the area is drained efficiently and maximises the effectiveness of the land drain pipes.
