Below you’ll find lists of plants suited to both open and closed terrariums. When deciding on which ones you want to give a try, mix and match your plants from one list only.

Regardless of species, all reptile tanks must be safe, secure, enriching and big enough. Larger reptiles need more space, stronger cages, better equipment and more décor. Smaller reptiles can be housed in smaller tanks and are often more beginner friendly. Wash the tank and décor using a sponge with hot water and a nontoxic soap (e.g. Dawn detergent). Fully clean the floor and sides. Now comes the fun part. However, before that, you should know that not everything in a terrarium has to be plants. It’s not all plain sailing though.Terrariums need a bit of planning so you get the right types of plants, the ideal size of container for them and the base layers just right for sufficient growth and plant longevity.

There are many different ways to set up a reptile terrarium. Setups range from practical and low maintenance to intricate and extremely natural. The unique leaves of this vine look like rows of shingles or a rattlesnake’s tail, depending on who you ask. They’re remarkable in the way the tiny leaves form so close together and the way they love to climb. Often, the flat leaves look like they were formed on the surface of whatever they are growing on as they overlap and form a solid wall of color. The starting point for a self-sufficient terrarium is to decide on the types of plants you intend to grow. Keep in mind that terrariums are glass enclosures and glass filters UV rays.

Known for their vibrant coloring, Watermelon Pellionia plants light up a terrarium. The foliage is gray-green, satiny in texture, and oblong with distinctive watermelon-like patterning. The fleshy and greenish-pink stems are also attractive and add to the watermelon look.

A hygrometer measures humidity levels in the air. Low humidity can be dangerous for tropical or exotic pets, while high humidity is bad for desert reptiles.
