About this deal

Adapting the practice is how I’ve had to make it work for me, much in the same way someone who follows a religion will practise it in a way that makes sense to them. Like them, I hadn’t had the simplest home life growing up and I was a troubled teen when I first stepped on a yoga mat in a creaking YMCA gym way back in 1996. UK time, join our live stream yoga philosophy, mindfulness, pranayama and discussion sessions hosted by Scott Johnson. It’s this one,’ I said, tapping my bare foot on his trainer, and he smiled, shaking his head as my heart swelled with gladness.

The Yoga Manifesto by Nadia Gilani - Pan Macmillan

Gregor Maehle on Yoga As A Mystical Experience Scott and Gregor talk openly about Gregor’s life as a yoga practitioner and mystic. The actual manifesto is simply 8 points which the Author feels need addressing and to be honest could have simply been put up on her IG page rather than stretched out into a book. A thorough and honest dissection of the ups and downs of modern yoga through the lens of one young woman's experience of yoga. It had been a while since I had last read a yoga book, and I was so thrilled to find one I connected with so strongly. In particular, those I’ve had the privilege to teach who are so often ignored by the wellness industry that yoga has got itself wrapped up in.

manifesto — Nadia Gilani

Since I haven’t always found yoga or indeed life to be straightforward, I’m interested in exploring how we all find our way through both. I couldn’t help but feel myself almost laughing too because, looking at it from their point of view and given that we had only just met, what we were doing was pretty odd. It’s also about the wonderful, strange, awkward and sometimes downright weird things I have learnt from working as a yoga teacher. It’s going to be different for everyone but what I’ve discovered is that most of us need something to believe in. I have a history of taking wrong turns in life that have ended in disaster around my birthday and was starting to wonder if this might be the latest one.It promises polemic and disruption but adds up to little more than an assemblage of worries around the politics and direction of the never-quite-defined "wellness industry". I asked everyone to collect a mat and it took us ages to get them to line up because some of the boys were acting up or sitting out, stubbornly refusing to help. We’re still together today but it’s safe to say that yoga and I had a complicated relationship for a long time. Teacher training that fails to impart this crucial understanding further distances yoga from its roots.

I loved the honesty and insight and it’s given me hope that I’ll be able to reengage with my practice again when the time is right. I think it did a lot towards some of the discussions around yoga, cultural appropriations, its purpose and what it means to practice. So the practice has never been a miracle cure when the chips were down for me and there were certainly times I wanted to give up on yoga but perhaps it didn’t want to give up on me. Several years into my own relationship with yoga and when I was hooked on Ashtanga, I was distraught to read an article by the controversial cult leader Osho who went as far as to say women shouldn’t practise Ashtanga because it would shrink their breasts and damage their wombs. As they move into and breathe into each shape, provide guidance to remind them to come back to their own awareness of self in each moment.Gregor shares how his childhood created the bedrock for a life of spiritual discovery, the outcome being a life embedded within the mystical limbs of yoga and contemplative practice. How effective the combination of cognitive therapy and mindfulness is at reducing the risk of relapse. Though I'm not of South Asian origin (and no, Nadia does not suggest you have to be to practice yoga - she reiterates this several times throughout the book) I'm not a skinny blonde who can do all the insta-worthy postures, and have often not felt that a lot of modern yoga was really for me, and differs from how and why I started practicing in the first place.
